FRAMES: Kitsap Photography Guild Presents…Well Uh…Me.

April 24th, 2012 by Meegan Reid

Are you going to be free on Thursday night and want to talk about photojournalism, maybe make some new photo friends and even heckle a Kitsap Sun Photographer from the back row for not choosing one of your Frames Challenge entries as a “stand-out”?

If you answered yes to any of those questions than you might consider coming out to the monthly meeting of the Kitsap Photography Guild where I have been tapped to give a presentation on Thursday at 7pm.

That’s right little old me will be there rambling and stammering and showing a whole bunch of photos because come on, no one wants to hear me talk they just want to look at photos. ;)

“Photographers of all skill levels are invited to attend the guild meeting and presentation. April 26, 2012 at 7PM in the Cavalon Place Building, 2011 Myhre Road, Silverdale, WA (Elevator to the 3rd floor conference room)”

FRAMES: Skagit Valley Tulips

April 17th, 2012 by Meegan Reid

Headed up to Skagit Valley this past weekend to take a gander at their famous tulip fields.

I must say, if one has a passion for flowers and photography…or just likes to see some nifty scenery, I’d head on up there before the blooms are gone because it was quite a lovely sight.

Here are a few shots:

FRAMES: Larry Goes To Victoria

April 12th, 2012 by Meegan Reid

Professional photographers have a hard time taking real vacations and leaving their cameras at home.

Case in point, Larry Steagall went to Victoria with his family last week when he took the week off of work and came back wanting to do a slideshow of some of his shots to share with you all. So I give you a quick glimpse into his trip to the North.

FRAMES: Hipstamatic View From The “Office”: Climbers

April 12th, 2012 by Meegan Reid

Went to Seattle yesterday for an upcoming story on a pair of Kitsap climbers and snapped this quick Hipstamatic iPhone app shot:

FRAMES: Photo Challenge #49: Corner Composition

April 10th, 2012 by Meegan Reid

With the return of Larry from vacation (well at least I think he has returned from vacation, even though I have yet to cross paths with him in the office for the past few days) it’s time to return to the photo challenges! Whoo!

There is no denying that composition and subject matter are the most important things in photography. But composition can make even the most visually uninteresting things really jump out of the frame and make the viewer pause and scrutinize the image.

This week’s challenge if you choose to accept it is: Corner Composition.

Now I don’t think that “corner composition” is really a technical term but that’s what I call it so I want to see your best photo that depicts your subject or point of interest in the corner (or corners) of your frame. The subject matter is up to you. Your camera choice is up to you (iPhone vs DSLR etc).

DEADLINE for entries will be April 23rd. so that gives you plenty of time to get out there and shoot some fresh photos with this technique. Rules and regulations will be posted at the end of this entry and if you have any questions or problems uploading the photos just shoot me an email at mreid@kitsapsun.com

***Your name (real life not email handle) MUST MUST MUST MUST be located somewhere on your entry since stand-outs will be chosen and published in an upcoming edition of the Kitsap Sun.

Here are a few from my archives to get you thinking:

Fellow members laugh as Karl Grahn, 82, tells a humorous story about his time as a member of the Sons of Norway in Bremerton. (MEEGAN M. REID/KITSAP SUN)

Five-month-old Marina Hanna sits snuggled in her carries as she and her grandmother Vicki Hanna take a rainy walk along Winslow Way on Bainbridge Island on Wednesday, December 28, 2011. (MEEGAN M. REID / KITSAP SUN)

Skyler Tiefer, 10, was recognized by Central Kitsap Fire and Rescue on Monday for his quick thinking during a fire in late October that likely saved the structure and his wheelchair-bound grandmother. (MEEGAN M. REID/KITSAP SUN)

***To recap: Every week or so we will post a new photography “challenge” to help build on all of our current photography skills and to encourage everyone to get out and get shooting (cameras not guns). While we encourage you to shoot the challenge in the week that it is assigned, we will however accept entries taken prior to the challenge assignment date.

When you’ve got your favorite shot, login to the Kitsap Sun Your Media Site (if you don’t already have a login, you can quickly set it one up) or click the “Kitsap Frames Photo Challenge Entries” button over there on the right side of the page and upload your image to the Kitsap Frames Photo Challenge Channel (the channels run along the left hand side of the page, again if you can’t seem to get it into the channel just upload it normally and send me an email and we’ll move it).

FRAMES: Photo Challenge #48: Pets: Stand-Outs

March 16th, 2012 by Meegan Reid

Nice job on the pet photos! Hmm would have thought there would have been more entries, since I see how many photos of pets are uploaded to our photo sharing site every day…but I digress onward we go!

Here are my favorite shots and a ramble about why I picked them. They will be published in an upcoming edition of the Kitsap Sun, most likely Monday, March 19th. but that could change, I’ll try to keep you posted

I also promise you all that I am not anti-cat…the dog photos just stood-out a little more to me. I hug cats just as much as I hug dogs I swear! ;)

A new challenge will be posted next week!

“Untitled” by Kari Rolnick

I love the vibrant color in the background and how it brings out the color of the pooch’s eyes ever so slightly. This shot also has a nice classic dog pose with the sweet and innocent look up and away from the camera.

“Phineas Learning About Crows” by Ed Palm

Well first, Phineas is just a plain delightful name for a little curly haired dog! This frame is well composed and not to mention pretty humorous. I am a fan of photos that make me wonder what the animal is thinking at that moment, and this shot has me pondering what does Phineas really think of crows?

“Covered” by lourceyphotos

I like the hopeful expression (hmm can a dog have a hopeful expression?) well it looks like a hopeful almost pleading expression to me asking the photographer to please let them play in the snow just a little bit longer.

“Kindred Happiness” by Faith Winters

Ah the love of a kid and her dog! I like the eye contact between the two and the body language of both subjects mirrors the other.
