FRAMES: Photo Challenge #77 closed and busted so bring on the festival flashback

Our photo challenge theme of  “Festival Fun” this month was a total bust and since I didn’t get enough entries to publish in the Sunday edition, I decided to do some digging in the archives and share a festival flashback of sorts.

As you may have read in a blog post previously, here at the Sun we have shelves full of boxes that are in turn full of film negatives dating all the way back to 1959. Each sleeve of negatives has the date in one corner, a brief description of the assignment/subject of the images captured on that roll of film, the section category of the paper it was for and finally the photographers initials. Each time I pull a sleeve of negs, that is the only information I have about the photos I am about to look at. AND there are times when sleeves don’t have a single word or date on them that might even give me a hint about what I am looking at.

Festivals of course usually happen every year, which means every year a staff photographer at the Sun has most likely been out at that parade or snapping away at the lutefisk eating contest. Here is a very small sampling of festival photos that were taken by Sun photographers throughout the years:

  1. Scotch broom festival?!

I love these photos, especially the kids sitting on top of the phone booth. My, have times changed. My son will probably ask me what a phone booth is one day. And, if you decide to place your kid on something that high today, over protective parents (and non-parents) will shame you. :)
