New Bremerton chief gets down to business

A week and a half into his stint as Bremerton’s police chief, Steve Strachan says he’s doing a lot of listening.

He’s been the new guy before, both in King County as chief deputy (and sheriff) and in Kent as chief. So he’s taking his time to get acclimated.

He’s already gone out on a ride-along with Sgt. Billy Renfro to get a feel for the streets, too. He’s met with staff. Gone out to the firing range (he carries a Glock).

On Wednesday, he was officially sworn in as chief of police. Bremerton Municipal Court Judge James Docter administered the oath before the audience, which included city officials, the police officers he’ll lead and other area law enforcement higher-ups (including Kitsap County Undersheriff Dennis Bonneville and Port Orchard Chief Al Townsend).

“To be able to lead the Bremerton Police Department is truly a privilege,” he told the crowd afterward.
