Let’s hear it for the horticulture exhibitAugust 23rd, 2012 by Chris Henry
The Xtreme Bulls were exciting. The pig races are full of actions, and who knows what to expect from the firebreathers?
Now for a change of pace.
Tucked quietly away on the second floor of the Kitsap Sun Pavilion, the flower show and horticulture exhibit features beautiful, living still life sculptures.
The exhibit is hosted, as in years past, by the Cross Sound District Garden Clubs and features entries of floral arrangements and horticulture specimens. In this case, “horticulture” covers flowers and garden plants. The vegetables are in a separate exhibit.
The Cross Sound District Garden Clubs is made up of members of garden clubs from Bremerton, Poulsbo, Bainbridge, Seabeck, Belfair and Port Orchard.
Members of the group pour hours into prepping for the exhibit and receiving entries, which are judged by garden club members from outside Kitsap County, for fairness’ sake.
Competition among exhibitors gets fierce, according to Jane Bentley, superintendent of horticulture. According to her husband Ed, Bentley pretty much “lives at the fair” these days.
This year is noteworthy to members of the Cross Sound District Garden Clubs, who will host a convention of the State Federation of Garden Clubs in May. The group will hold fundraisers in upcoming months to put on a great shindig for their guests.
Their first fundraiser is a rummage sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 8 at the American Legion Hall, Post 149, at 9422 Kitsap Way in Bremerton.
The group will hold a flower show open to the public from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sept. 17 at the Westside Improvement Club, 4109 E Street, Bremerton.
