Wednesday at the winter meetings
December 5th, 2012 by terrybenishJosh Hamilton went home last night. Turns out according Kansas City manager Ned Yost that nobody talked to them about Billy Butler. Somebody’s lying somewhere about this. Not sure who, have my suspicions.
Looks like the Mariners will sign Jason Bay, once a decent corner guy that fell on hard times and got old. The latest is that it will be to a multiple year deal. Oh boy! Hope to be proven wrong, but it seems as if Casper Wells has more going on right now than Jason.
Swisher does not have deal yet, nor does Hamilton. Does not seem as if Rangers will offer Hamilton much of anything in terms of years. Swisher out in cold too.
When you look at it, given the Mariner’s pattern of free falling attendance, their management response to that is to cut salaries so they can get their operating bonus. The notion as originally propagated by Dolly Levi that to get a return you need to invest your money has not been a concept the Mariners embraced. They DID pay Ichiro a huge amount, but they believed there was linkage to Japanese tourists coming to Seattle to watch him play, not to mention merchandise sales.
So you got bean counters who don’t trust the baseball people versus aging players wanting a bunch of years. Does not seem like a marriage that will consummate.
Shannon Drayer tweets about passing of Dave Brubeck…sad, sad event.
