Five to Watch This Year at Bumbershoot

August 28th, 2008 by adice

Adam Kispert, who has been reviewing new album releases for Kitsap A&E for the past few years, usually has some pretty good taste in music, so we’re posting his top five picks for Bumbershoot this year first, followed by other writers’ picks later in the week:

Lucinda Williams (2:45 to 4 p.m. Aug. 30, Mainstage): Infused with a healthy dose of rock ‘n’ roll, Williams’ brand of country music is meticulously crafted and full of intimate detail. Her 1998 classic “Car Wheels on a Gravel Road” (see her sing it below) won the hearts of fans and critics, and she’s been releasing consistently good albums ever since.

Beck (9:15 to 10:45 p.m. Aug. 30, Mainstage): With his unique musical vision, a riveting and eclectic mix of blues, country, rock, psychedelic, funk, hip hop and everything in between, Beck is a ’90s icon who has translated well to the new millennium. His latest, “Modern Guilt,” was produced by Dangermouse and is one of the year’s best releases.

The Black Keys (7:45 to 8:45 p.m. Aug. 31, Mainstage): The bluesy duo from Ohio dig deep to create a surprisingly full and heavy sound for being just a voice, guitar and drums. But Dan Auerbach’s voice and guitar are from the gut, and Patrick Carney’s drums thunder along.

Sondre Lerche (8:30 to 9:30 p.m. Sept. 1, Northwest Court): This young Norwegian singer-songwriter has a deft pop touch, and his last couple of albums, “Phantom Punch” and the soundtrack to “Dan in Real Life,” show that the one-time wunderkind has now fully matured.

Tapes ‘n Tapes (9:30 to 10:45 p.m. Aug. 31, Broad Street): Indie pop sensations after releasing their 2006 debut “The Loon,” Tapes ‘n Tapes followed it up with this year’s solid “Walk It Off.” Their energetic and slightly quirky brand of music stands out from the crowd and marks them as a band to watch for the future.
