Harvest Fair

Tuesday, September 27th, 2011

This past Sunday, September 25, was the Annual Harvest Fair over at Johnson Farm on Bainbridge Island. Every year the Friends of the Farms work hard to organize this fabulous family friendly event.

Each year, my husband is honored to be one of the Pie Judges, and the girls and I come along to enjoy the fair!

This time, when we awakened on Sunday morning to see the rain teaming down, we were a little disappointed. We all bundled up in rain gear and trudged out to the grounds. When we got there, the rain stopped and we saw this:

It turned out to be one of the nicest Fall days complete with sun and a rainbow.

There were, also, animals…

And Produce. Both grown…

Beautiful Strawberries grown by Sol Farm.

…and made!

And then there were the pies. Oh the pies!

And those who judge the pies.

Add some spectacular music and the whole experience was complete!

Cat Loves Crow was one of the many bands that played and created a lively fair atmosphere.

So if you haven’t ever had the chance to attend this wonderful community event, I highly recommend marking your calendars for next year!

In the meantime, you can check out more photos of this day over at Falafel and the Bee.

Bella Bella Cupcakes…

Monday, January 17th, 2011

Hey all you Kitsapers…there’s a new gig in town and man-o-man is it sweet.  This past weekend Bella Bella Cupcakes opened a retail shop in Silverdale and of course we had to hop right in the car for a wee bit of dessert.  Head on over to Oh Happy Days for the full report.  After that head on over to Bella Bella Cupcakes (10726 Silverdale Way) for a treat.  You can even host your child’s birthday party there…no muss no fuss and lots of sugar!

My Favorite Sign of Summer

Monday, July 19th, 2010

We have many signs of summer in this region of the country, longer daylight hours: less rain, noisy, bobnoxious kids home from school, and bright yellow Goldfinches at the feeders.

But this is my all-time favorite Sign of Summer:

And it’s right here on Bainbridge Island (although there are other, delicious places for U-Pick berries in the area, too).

When I see that sign, I know it invariably leads to this:

A bit of red heavenly goodness. Okay, maybe more than just a bit.

Mmmmmmmmmm.

What are your favorite things to do with these little bits of heaven? Do you have some other favorite sign of summer?

Gluten-Free Yumminess

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

Just like any good Washingtonian, I like me some coffee.

Since we moved here 12 years ago, I have come to really appreciate that magic bean. The one negative thing (only to my waistline) is that I need to eat something sweet while drinking it. Really. NEED.

About a year ago I found out I had a wheat allergy. Not a big deal for me, because there are lots of substitutes for it. I like Rice.

The area it hurt the most was in my sweet tooth. Some gluten-free desserts are just not equal to, let’s see…donuts or brownies for example.

Slowly over the last year, I have developed a list of gluten-free tasty desserts that I enjoy with my coffee. I’d like to share a few of them (just the list now, you’ll have to make your own) with you.

  • Namaste Chocolate Cake Mix. Fantastic if you are missing chocolate cupcakes. These pass the test even with gluten eating peoples. They are so good.
  • Namaste also has a Perfect Flour Blend, that is really it. Perfect. I love it. There is a recipe on the back for oatmeal cookies (I add chocolate chips). They are just the thing to eat with coffee. Mmmmmm.
  • Peanut Butter Cookies. I have a simple delicious recipe for you.

1 egg

1 cup sugar

1 cup peanut butter

1 Tsp baking powder

Mix together, and then roll into balls. Roll balls into sugar. Place on baking sheet and take a fork and press down in an “X”. Bake for 10-12 minutes on 350.

That’s it.

Enjoy!

  • Lastly, but not least-ly~ Granola Bars: There are a bunch of recipes out there for Gluten-Free Granola and Granola Bars, but I have an absolute favorite recipe that the whole family loves! I tweeked one, that I found significantly, so I feel confident in sharing this as my own.

2 1/2 cups Gluten-free Oats

3/4 chocolate chips

1/2 Cup of Almond butter

2 TBSP Sunflower seeds

2 TBSP Pumpkin Seeds

1 TBSP Vanilla

3/4 Cup Honey

1/4 Tsp salt

1/4 cup of brown sugar

Press mixture into a greased 8×8 pan . Bake at 350 for 20 minutes. Wait 10 minutes for them to cool, then cut into bars. Oh so good!

Gluten-Free Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies. Yuuuummmy.

Gluten-Free Granola Bars

What are your favorite Gluten-Free sweets??

Chestnuts are Overrated and HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Sunday, November 22nd, 2009

It’s that time of year again. It is the time of year our we lose our minds.

No?

Cooking, and list-making, and cooking, and present planning (or shopping if you are on the ball like that and I hate you), card sending and pie buying making.

Not only is it a time of year we reflect on the things we are thankful for… it is also a time of year we do stupid things…

LIKE DECIDE TO MAKE RECIPES WITH PEELED CHESTNUTS.

That’s what happened to my family last Thanksgiving.

My brother-in-law found a stuffing recipe he wanted to make for Thanksgiving. The recipe (by Martha Stewart) called for boiled, peeled chestnuts.

*coughcough*

I used Twitter to document the peeling of the cursed boiled chestnuts:

• 8:28 p.m. Thanksgiving Eve: Attention fellow domestic goddesses: Marta Stewart has a flippin’ STAFF to peel her pounds & pounds of precious chestnuts! *fingers cramping*

• 8:40 p.m.: I mean, Martha Stewart. This is absolutely ridiculous.

• 8:51 p.m.: And now my thumbs are not only nail-less, but also paralyzed.

I sacrificed the sacred use of my opposable thumbs for this sad little pile of chestnut shells:

The stuffing was quite yummy… except for the chestnuts.

So. What are your plans for Thanksgiving? Are you going to be peeling chestnuts and rolling-out pie crust, or opening a box of Stove Top and peeling plastic off a frozen pie crust? I’ll give you one guess what I’ll be doing…

Happy Thanksgiving!

Fun With Food – Pringles

Tuesday, August 4th, 2009

A friend came over and taught my kids a new trick with food. Being the “good mom” that I am, I told the kids, “Hold it! I need to get a picture!”

Pringles beak

Here’s a side-shot, just so you can teach your kids how to have fun with their Pringles! Any flavor of Pringles will do, but I found the cheesey kind lends to that “beakish” appeal…
