Interesting, like the probing personal thoughts. And -- on the performers themselves -- have you interviewed enough of them to write a piece that relects on their emotions, goals, personal backgrounds -- the "drive" that moves them into the sport. I'd like to read that. How ARE these "brutes" (LOL!) different from the average guy...and LIKE the average guy?

I think the question is "why does this sport have to be in a cage?" This sport was once even more controversial than it is today. There weren't always great gyms dedicated to the safety of fighters, the likes of which you will see in Kitsap and throughout Washington. Likewise, the rules of play have developed and evolved around such motivations. Referees have come a long way in all this too, so imagine the crowd that pioneered this sport. A very rough crowd. The cage was originally for protecting the fighters from the crowd, and keeping the octagon clear for a fair bout, or so I have been told, and I don't doubt it. Now I would imagine it has a lot of emblematic significance, but the same applies. Protect the fighters, keep the fight fair.

"Writer/fighter?" LOL. You do have much talent for writing in an amusing and thoughtful journalistic style. Hope you move, if you haven't already, beyond the sports genre...a weekly column, perhaps. On general topics of interest to you. (Did myself a few years into retirement!) How to "get in"? Write three or four columns, submit them to more than a few editors....and, viola, a call may come! You have the talent, now promote it!!

Yes Papa. Very quick medical response. Rope-a-dope in MMA is a bit more complicated than in boxing. Grappling/wrestling, kicking, fists, everything is allowed. Getting up against the cage would be a disaster for me.
