700 in Kitsap to lose unemployment benefits

About 730 people in Kitsap County are among the 1.3 million Americans set to lose unemployment benefits Saturday as a federal program shuts down.

The “emergency unemployment compensation” program was not extended by Congress this year. Roughly 25,000 Washington residents will stop receiving payments after this weekend.

Out-of-work Washingtonians can qualify for 26 weeks of regular unemployment benefits, according to the state Employment Security Department. The federal program extended benefits by 37 weeks for qualified applicants. Only the regular benefits will now be available for most workers, unless the federal program is renewed in 2014.

Unemployment in Kitsap County was 6.1 percent in November, down from 6.6 percent a year ago.

The statewide, seasonally adjusted unemployment rate dropped to 6.8 percent in November. But Washington lost 6,000 jobs in the same period.
