Purpose Boutique, Habit Burger planned at Trails

brempurpose_9177864_ver1.0_640_480A Bremerton boutique and a California burger chain have been announced as tenants in The Trails at Silverdale shopping center.

Purpose Boutique and The Habit Burger Grill are both slated to open at The Trails this spring, according to a Tuesday news release from developer CenterCal Properties.

UnknownSilverdale will be the third location for Purpose, which has stores on Pacific Avenue in Bremerton, and on Central Way in Kirkland.

The Habit Burger Grill operates dozens of restaurants in California, but just one in Washington (it’s in Kent). The Irvine-based chain describes itself as a “fast casual restaurant concept that specializes in preparing fresh, made-to-order char-grilled burgers and sandwiches.”

Other businesses slated to open in The Trails this year include Corner Bakery, DSW, Forever 21, Jersey Mike’s, Old Navy, Sleep Number, and Verizon.

Chipotle, MOD Pizza, Silverdale Smiles Dentistry, and Total Wine already opened this year in the Greaves Way development.

Taco Bell planned for Highway 303

taco.bellUPDATE: For those of you wondering, it appears the applicants for the new Taco Bell project are also owners of the existing Taco Bell on Wheaton Way.

A Taco Bell with drive-thru is planned for a vacant lot on Highway 303, south of Fairgrounds Road, according to a permit application filed with the county.

The 2,000-square-foot restaurant will be built adjacent to Starbucks, Quiznos and, most interestingly, a Taco del Mar.

(Taco Time is located on the same stretch of highway, and there’s a Taco Bell less than 2 miles south on Wheaton Way.)

The state Department of Agriculture will host a tour in Kitsap and Jefferson counties Monday with the aim of uniting local food producers and food buyers.

The tour bus will visit at farms, a grocery store, restaurants, a brewery and a regional food hub. At each stop, industry professionals will discuss their experiences and offer tips for success.

“It’s an opportunity for buyers to get to know farms, but also farms to get to know the market opportunities available to them,” Raymond said.

Silverdale Chipotle opening pushed to Saturday

chipotleKitsap County’s first Chipotle restaurant is now scheduled to open at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 12, according to a spokeswoman.

The Trails at Silverdale store had been scheduled to debut March 10. Total Wine & More opened its Trails location as planned.

Farm Kitchen is phasing out its popular First Saturday breakfasts

farmkitchen04_21695950_ver1.0_640_480Farm Kitchen’s First Saturday Breakfast is a monthly tradition for many North Kitsap residents. This spring, that tradition will come to a close.

Farm Kitchen announced this week it will discontinue its popular monthly breakfasts after May.

Co-owner Anne Thatcher said Farm Kitchen’s other ventures are blossoming and they no longer have the energy and resources to keep the breakfasts going.

“It’s just time to close that chapter in our business,” Thatcher said.

Thatcher and co-owner Hollis Fay began offering breakfasts at the Port Gamble Road farmyard 17 years ago. These days the event draws as many as 400 guests each month.

farmkitchen06_21695952_ver1.0_640_480“The hard part is how very much we’ll miss seeing all our regulars on a regular basis,” Thatcher said. “That’s the sad thing to us.”

The final two breakfasts will be held from 8 a.m. to noon, April 2 and May 7. No reservations needed.

Breakfast regulars can still find Farm Kitchen fare at coffee shops and cafés in the area (there’s a listing here). The farm also rents out a commercial kitchen, and hosts weddings and other events.

Thatcher said its possible Farm Kitchen will offer occasional breakfasts in the future. You can check the the business’s page on Facebook for updates.

Silverdale Chipotle, Total Wine will open in March

chipotle

Update: A Chipotle spokeswoman said the Silverdale opening has been pushed to Saturday, March 12.

Another wave of stores are set to open next month in The Trails at Silverdale shopping center.

Chipotle Mexican Grill will debut March 10, according to a spokeswoman. So will beverage retailer Total Wine and More.

totalwineMOD Pizza, a Seattle-based, made-to-order pizza chain, expects to launch its Trails location March 18.

The county has issued tenant improvement permits to Corner Bakery Café, Forever 21, Verizon, DSW and Sleep Number, allowing those companies to begin outfitting their stores.

A representative for developer CenterCal Properties confirmed Old Navy also is planning a Trails store.

Silverdale Smiles Dentistry was the most recent business to open at the Greaves Way shopping center, joining Blazing Onion, Homegoods, Ulta Beauty and AT&T.

Centercal has yet to announce tenants for a few remaining retail spaces, including a planned grocery store. The developer began work on The Trails in August 2014.

The opening of Chipotle — the first west of Puget Sound — has been highly anticipated since it was announced last summer. But the chain’s reputation took a beating this winter as a series of E. coli and norovirus outbreaks were linked to its restaurants.

According to the New York Times, Chipotle turned to food safety specialist Mansour Samadpour to overhaul its safety protocols. Samadpour is a familiar name in Kitsap. He owns prominent properties in downtown Port Orchard.

Chipotle is posting food safety information here.

Hitchcock pizzeria expanding to old Winslow hardware

As we recently reported, the long-vacant Winslow Hardware space on Bainbridge Island is being renovated to accommodate a restaurant and offices.

Now we know what restaurant will be moving in.

Hitchcock owner and chef Brendan McGill announced on Facebook that his pizzeria popup Bruciato will open as a standalone restaurant in the old hardware this summer:

With full hearts and tremendous gratitude, allow us to introduce our new home in the heart of Winslow Way. That's…

Posted by Bruciato on Tuesday, February 2, 2016

The 6,350-square-foot hardware had been owned by Storyville Coffee, which for years teased islanders with promises of a café “coming soon.”

Storyville sold the property to California developer Joseph Lacko for $1.73 million this winter. Lacko planned to subdivide the space and bring on two tenants.

We’ll have more on this story soon.

Poulsbo café adding Bainbridge location

A popular Winslow café has moved. A busy Poulsbo café is expanding to take its place.

Roosters Café closed its Bjune Drive location this month and moved in with Thuy’s Pho House on Madison Avenue.

Roosters will be replaced on Bjune by Cups Espresso Café, which opened its first shop on Poulsbo’s Front Street in 2012. Cups owners hope to open on Bainbridge by mid-February.

Business at Cups in Poulsbo has grown 60 percent in the past three years, according to a news release. Owners Wanda and Sean Winker were looking for an opportunity to launch a second shop on the island.

“We’re excited to expand our operations to Bainbridge Island,” Wanda Winker said in the release.

“We have lived on Bainbridge more than six-years and it has been our goal to find the ideal location to serve our community with the same success we’ve had in Poulsbo.”

The Bainbridge Cups will offer the same selection of food and beverages as its Poulsbo counterpart, including Caffé Umbria espresso, beer, wine, pastries, quiche, strata, and sandwiches. Catering will be available.

See the Cups website and Facebook page for more updates.

U.S. Open pumped $134M into regional economy

golf1_199469_ver1.The U.S. Open at Chambers Bay was expected to bring a lot of green to the Northwest.

The weeklong event lived up to expectations, according to an economic impact analysis commissioned by the USGA.

The study, conducted by Northwest economists, estimated the golf championship gave a $134 million boost to the economies of Pierce, King, Kitsap and Thurston counties.

Local governments spent about $7.6 million on the event, with more than $4 million coming from Pierce County.

The tournament, which ran June 15-21, attracted about 110,000 unique attendees to the Pierce County golf course. More than half came from surrounding counties, while one-third traveled from other states.

Chambers3_17063782_ver1.0_640_480“No other one week event in the history of the Pacific Northwest has had a greater economic impact,” Pierce County Executive Pat McCarthy said in a new release.

The direct economic benefit to Kitsap County was relatively small, but not insignificant.

The report estimated the county’s hotel/motel sector reaped a $349,000 increase in revenue in June (hoteliers were already having a good year). Many Kitsap golf courses reported an uptick in traffic around the time of the U.S. Open.

Tourism boosters hope a more greater benefit to the county will materialize in the future, as spectators exposed to the region through the U.S. Open return to visit.

Kingston’s Grub Hut rolls food truck into Bremerton

grub.hutrNorth Kitsap’s popular Grub Hut restaurant just rolled into Bremerton.

The Kingston eatery began stationing a food truck near Fourth and Pacific earlier this month. The mobile “Grub Hutr” will be parked in the area each Tuesday.

The Grub Hutr offers several grass-fed burger varieties, along with hot dogs and sides. There’s no fryer on board, so the menu is slimmer than what you’d find in the restaurant.

f26624c7-8e0f-48f1-be5b-7b9c42bfbda7The Grub Hut’s truck joins a very modest fleet of Bremerton-area food trucks.

An Island Tiki Truck can usually be found by Uptown Mercantile. The Taqueria Los Cazadores‘ mobile kitchen is frequently stationed on Sixth Street.

Grub Hut owners say they would consider keeping the truck in Bremerton more days each week if near the shipyard are strong.

The Grub Hutr arrived in town as Poulsbo’s Liberty Bay Books announced plans to keep its Pacific Avenue pop-up store into the New Year.

Could this be the beginning of a trend of North Kitsap businesses venturing into Bremerton? As a Poulsbo resident, I’m all for it.

For updates on the Grub Hut food truck, see the restaurant’s Facebook page.
