A new president and
chief medical officer was announced Thursday for Franciscan
Medical Group, CHI Franciscan’s network of clinics, physicians and
providers.
The Tacoma-based medical group hired Dr. Michael Marshall, who most recently served as president of Allina Health Clinics and senior vice president of Allina Health, in Minnesota. His first day with CHI Franciscan is Feb. 23, according to a news release.
Marshall is one of several new executives to join CHI Franciscan and Harrison this winter. David Schultz started began his duties as Harrison president in December.
CHI Franciscan hired Ketul Patel as its CEO in December. He also starts Feb. 23.
CHI Franciscan and Harrison are affiliated with Catholic Health Initiative of Colorado.

Michael Marshall, MD, has been named the new President and Chief Medical Officer for Franciscan Medical Group, CHI Franciscan Health’s regional network of clinics, physicians and other providers. The medical group has more than 100 clinics and approximately 600 physicians in Pierce, King and Kitsap counties. Its physicians and other providers represent more than 100 medical specialties.

He is the right leader to ensure that Franciscan Medical Group remains the region’s preeminent, multi-specialty medical group.”
Dr. Marshall is board certified in Family Medicine and most recently served as the President of Allina Health Clinics and Senior Vice President of Allina Health, a large nonprofit health system located in the Twin Cities metropolitan area of Minnesota. The Allina Health clinic network consists of more than 1,000 physicians and other professional providers working in 67 clinics, eight urgent care centers and 12 hospitals in the Minneapolis – St. Paul metropolitan area.

At Allina Health, Dr. Marshall successfully integrated three medical groups, maintained their long history of exceptional clinical quality and enhanced their performance in ambulatory patient safety, clinical peer review, patient experience, patient access and provider engagement. Besides organizing programs to enhance the role of primary care, he developed organizational structures to strengthened specialty departments and integrated patient care with clinical service lines, hospitals, and different geographical markets. He also introduced numerous initiatives to improve operational efficiencies and the financial performance of clinics. Dr. Marshall also led the patient experience, patient care coordination and population health management initiatives for the entire Allina Health system.
Dr. Marshall previously served as the Vice President of Medical Operations for the Aurora Medical Group in Wisconsin and as the Medical Director for the Foundation Medical Partners Medical Group, New Hampshire. Dr. Marshall has worked as a Family Medicine and Urgent Care physician in Minnesota, New Hampshire and Canada for 17 years.
Dr. Marshall received his undergraduate and medical degrees from University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa. He completed his board certification in Family Medicine in Canada through the College of Family Physicians of Canada and in the United States, through the American Board of Family Medicine. Dr. Marshall has also completed a Master of Medical Management degree from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburg and is currently completing a Master of Finance degree through the University of Southern New Hampshire.
Dr. Marshall will join CHI Franciscan Health on February 23, 2015, and will serve on the system’s senior executive team. He succeeds Stephen Spare, MD, who retired last year.
