Speaking of rain and the Rose Parade, a look back in time shows it has only rained nine out of 120 times on parade day: 1895, 1899, 1906, 1910, 1916, 1922, 1934, 1937, and 1955. While rain has, in some years, delayed the start of the parade, it has never canceled the event.

And they’re off. Today the band embarks on its trip to the Los Angeles area and their ultimate goal: to play in the Rose Parade on New Year’s Day.

Eat your heart out Kitsap County (and Madison, S.D.). The National Weather Service predicts a week of mild weather for Pasadena and vicinity, with highs in the mid-60s, creeping to a high of 70 on New Year’s. Nights are cool, in the low to mid-40s. Winds are calm. It will be partly sunny today and tomorrow, but by Tuesday, the kids will enjoy mostly sunny weather. Hope they didn’t forget the sunscreen.

By comparison, the outlook for Bremerton and vicinity calls for partly sunny today with a high near 45, and it’s all downhill from there. Clouds will move in Monday night with rain likely through Friday, lows in the mid- to low-30s, highs in the mid- to low-40s. Happy New Year Kitsap. Keep that umbrella handy.

While over in Madison, South Dakota, the thermometer will get all the way up to 22 degrees today, with a 60 percent chance of snow. Tonight’s low is 3 degrees F. Need I say more?
