Bremerton School Board Candidates Get Grilled

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

Candidates for Bremerton School Board fielded questions on everything from background checks for school employees and volunteers to how to reduce the high school drop-out rate during the League of Women Voters of Kitsap’s first general election candidate forum.
Candidates attending the event Sept. 21 at the Norm Dicks Government Center included Scott Rahm and Christianne Martin for Position 1, Cynthia Galloway and David Boynton for Position 4 and Carolyn Perkins for Position 5.
Ruben Garcia, Perkins’ opponent, did not attend the forum.
Catherine Ahl, a former North Kitsap School Board member and president of the local LWV, moderated the session.
The audience was small, but the forum was covered by Marietta Nelson, education writer for the Kitsap Sun, with a front page story. Those who are interested but did not attend can catch the forum on BKAT (Channel 12 or 3) at the following times:
Sept. 23: 10 a.m., Sept. 25: 4 p.m., Sept. 27: 4 p.m., Sept. 28: 1 p.m.

Meet the Candidates Tonight

Monday, September 21st, 2009

If you live in Bremerton, tonight’s your chance to size up the candidates running for your local school board.
Although they are unpaid and their campaigns usually low key, school board members make many important decisions that affect the lives of students, their families and the larger community. The board has the power to hire and fire the superintendent, set the terms of the superintendent’s contract, decide which programs to cut when finances get tight, set levy amounts and set the budget for each school year.
The League of Women Voters of Kitsap will hold a forum for Bremerton School Board candidates at 7 tonight (Monday, Sept. 21) at the Norm Dicks Government Center, 345 6th St., in downtown Bremerton.
It’s your chance to meet the candidates and see how they handle crucial questions of school policy and finance. Catherine Ahl, a former North Kitsap School Board member and current president of the local League, will moderate.
The public is welcome to attend, and the audience is invited to submit questions for the candidates.
