Marking the Day

Carolyn Powers, Port Orchard’s only female council member, read a proclamation announcing Aug. 26 as Women’s Equality Day at the Tuesday (Aug. 10) council meeting. Leaguers Joyce Maddock and Ann Smith and Kitsap Historical Society President Susan Daniel all attended and donned hats to honor their grandmothers and the struggle for women’s right to vote.

Instituted by Rep. Bella Abzug and first established in 1971, Women’s Equality Day commemorates the passage of the 19th Amendment, the Woman Suffrage Amendment to the Constitution, which gave U.S. women full voting rights 90 years ago, in 1920.
All of Kitsap’s cities and the county are issuing proclamations this year at the request of the League. Bremerton made its proclamation on Aug. 4, Poulsbo and Bainbridge Island are scheduled to issue theirs on Aug. 18, and the county on Aug. 23. The League plans to have members and supporters at all the meetings and is inviting them to wear hats.
The League’s big Suffrage Celebration is planned for Sept. 10 from 5-8:30 p.m. at the Silverdale Beach Hotel. Cost is $25. Anyone who wishes to attend is asked to make reservations by Sept. 3 by sending a check for $25 payable to the League of Women Voters Kitsap to LWVK, Box 1524, Poulsbo, WA 98370. For information on the event call 360-697-7924.
