League Supports Gay Marriage

Here is the state League’s position on Referendum 74

Approve R-74, Civil Marriage for Same-Sex Couples

LWVWA supports this law which allows caring and committed same-sex couples to be legally married.

The Approval of Ref. 74 will provide equal access to the protection, respect and dignity of marriage, without taking anything away from other couples or families. It also firmly protects religious freedom, assuring that clergy and religious institutions will not be required to perform same-sex marriages.

The League of Women Voters was founded on a commitment to equal treatment under the law, regardless of sex. We continue to hold equality as a core value. This is reflected in the LWVUS’s position in favor of marriage equality.
