‘Soldiers in Petticoats’ Celebrates the Suffragettes

LWV Kitsap will partner with Kitsap Regional Library for a party celebrating the centennial of women’s right to vote in Washington at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 24 at the Poulsbo Library.
Actress and historian Tames Alan will present “Soldiers in Petticoats: The Struggle of the Suffragettes.” In 1867, the passing of the 14th amendment defined “citizen” as “male,” thus denying women the right to vote. Learn how American women adopted the militant tactics of their English sister suffragettes to earn the right to vote and regain citizenship in their own country. Discover how the suffragettes influenced child labor laws, the use and dispersal of birth control, the Temperance movement, the right of women to earn a college degree, and their relationship with the abolitionists.

  1. Thanks League of Women’s voters for putting on the candidate forum. I was sorry to see that only one candidate (Derrick Kilmer) made it for the 26th which is my district. It was a great opportunity overall to hear from many of the candidates.
