Making a Difference Locally
September 15th, 2009 by lwvkitsapThe League of Women Voters takes positions on a national level,
such as its support for health care reform, but it also does a lot
of work on the state and local level.
If you read the Kitsap Sun regularly, you probably saw the Sept. 8
story by reporter Ed Friedrich on the decision by the state
Transportation Commission not to impose a super summer surcharge on
top of the regular surcharge and an across-the-board rate increase.
One of the people quoted in the story was Luella Wells. She serves
as transportation chair for both the state and Kitsap League.
She pointed out that even though the proposed super surcharge was
aimed at tourists, it would also penalize residents of
ferry-dependent communities, increase the costs of goods and
services and force more cars onto the highways.
This is an example of the type of service the League performs.
League members study the issues that matter to local residents,
such as ferry service, bus service and road improvements, reach a
consensus on the best course of action, and testify before the
Legislature, county commissioners and other relevant boards and
commissions.
Sometimes, as in the case of the super summer surcharge, they even
listen.
