I had the nicest conversation last night with Danique Gigger, the valedictorian for South Kitsap High School’s class of 2010. She has never missed a day of school. That’s 180 days a year for 13 years, or 2340 days.

“I get sick very conveniently, like I got chicken pox over Thanksgiving break in kindergarten,” she said. I personally don’t think it’s a coincidence that Danique has perfect attendance AND she’s the valedictorian. Being in class must have something to do with academic achievement. So I hunted around a bit online for a study that might shed some light on this. What I found isn’t a perfect correlation to Danique’s situation, but it’s an interesting read anyway. Check it out here.

Gigger has plans to attend the University of Puget Sound and then hopes after a few years to transfer to NYU. She wants to work in journalism or book publishing. Look for a story and photo about Danique in tomorrow’s Sun.

Parents and teachers: What’s your take on school supplies this year?

I’m wondering if the economy is affecting school supply lists this year? Teachers? Parents?

It seemed a little like my kids’ school supply lists were shorter this year than in the past. Pencils weren’t even on the lists as a local orthodontist (Naumann & Johnson) donated two dozen for each student at our school.

Teachers, did you ask for less? Parents, are you reusing old supplies or just plain buying less? (I know we are – my kids just sharpened that box of old colored pencils from last year and there’s plenty of glue left in those glue sticks.) Has anyone found a good source for less expensive supplies? From the Sunday ads it looked like Office Max had some pretty good deals.

I’m working on a story this week about local students who will be attending the Presidential Inauguration. There’s quite a large group from Olympic High School in CK and at least one other student from CK who will be attending. Do you know any others? If so, please email me at kitsapeducation@yahoo.com.

North Kitsap School District is urgently seeking students’ “yellow” cards – those half-sheet cardstock cards that came home a few months ago. They help count the number of students in the district who are affiliated with federal employment (i.e. the military.) Based on several different factors – including the cards – NK schools receive what’s known as “federal impact aid” – or cash.

NK is currently missing 700 cards and the district could miss out on the cash if they aren’t returned before Winter Break. NK sent out a mass email Wednesday to families who did not turn in their cards. Attached to the email was a card. Families can simply print out one card for each student, fill them in and send them to school. If you need more information, contact Chris Case at 360 779 8703 or ccase@nkschools.org
