Care to review proposed national education standards?

A draft of the common national educational standards is now available. Washington is one of 48 states working on an effort to establish the standards. Lots of folks have a reason to want to chime in – for all the obvious reasons PLUS Education Secretary Arne Duncan and President Obama have made it clear that those states open to this sort of change will be considered for some of the $4 billion Race to the Top funds.

Do we need national education standards?

The Washington Post reports this morning that 46 states, including Washington, have signed onto an effort to hammer out nationalized education standards. Leaders from the National Association of Governors and the Council of Chief State School Officers will spearhead the effort to outline the standards. Supporters of nationalized standards say the current patchwork of state standards and testing does not give an accurate picture of how American students are performing in school. As well, some states may set the bar low and leave their students ill-prepared for work and further education.
