The North Kitsap School Board will hold two public meeting this week to listen to community members’ ideas for cutting the budget, as well as discussing the suggestions that have come in from budget work groups.
The first meeting will be held tonight at 7 in the North Kitsap High School commons. The second meeting will be held Wednesday night at 7 in the commons at Kingston High School.
The meetings will take on an almost speed-dating format. Each school board member will be sitting at a table with someone nearby to take notes. Community members will then be asked to sit with each school member for about five minutes to explain their budget-cutting suggestions or discuss their opinions on budget-cutting ideas that have already been proposed.
“We want to have people have a chance to talk with them face to face,” said schools spokeswoman Chris Case.
NK schools have been working with community and staff members on budget-cutting ideas since November, when more than 100 people gathered for the first budget-work groups meetings. Those budget-work groups met multiple times over a period of about a month, combing through the budget line by line to find cuts.
Another large group meeting to evaluate the line-by-line work was held in January. The district has also been accepting “blue-note” suggestions from the community. All budget-cutting information from the meetings and the blue notes can be seen at www.nkschools.org on the home page.

The press release pasted below came to me last night over email. Some interesting changes in NK leadership. I have a call in to spokeswoman Chris Case about the money end of these changes. I’ll post something later as I get it.

North Kitsap School District Superintendent Rick Jones announced changes in the administrative structure of the school district Wednesday. The departure of Executive Director of Finance and Operations Nancy Moffatt, who left to become executive director of the Washington Association of School Business Officers, has led to a restructuring of leadership within the district. Jones announced that he will not replace Moffatt’s position for the balance of the school year. Jones commented that he is “confident that (the district) will continue to operate effectively and efficiently until final decisions for the long-term future can be determined.”

The district is currently conducting a community/staff budget development process with the goal of eliminating $1.3 million in expenses. Additionally, an outside consultant has performed an analysis of the district’s administrative structure.

For the remainder of this school year, Chris Hatch will serve as the Director of Finance. Hatch was administrative assistant for finance previously and has many years of experience in the district financial office.

Also at this time, Jones announced his “decision to reduce our district office administration.” At the end of this school year, the position of Executive Director of Student Support Services will be eliminated. Gregg Epperson, who has held this position for the past eight years, was thanked for his contributions during his 36-year career with the district.

Beginning in the 2009-10 school year, Chris Willits will be promoted to Executive Director of Human Resources and Operations. Willits is currently the district’s Director of Human Resources and previously was Pearson Elementary School Principal.

For the remainder of this year, Willits will supervise the district’s Food Service and Transportation departments. The Director of Facilities and Maintenance and the Director of Capital Programs will report directly to the Superintendent. Chris Case will oversee the North Kitsap Community Swimming Pool.
