Leaders of the North Mason School District’s effort to pass a $54.5 million construction bond on Feb. 3, 2009, have made two folksy YouTube videos that offer persuasive arguments to voters. The YouTube video idea to promote a school financial issue is unprecedented, at least in Kitsap County as far as I can tell.
As expected, Superintendent David Peterson and school board President John Campbell are featured talking about the bond. But the videos also feature one North Mason student talking about falling down in puddle of water in a school hallway, a second who noticed plants growing through a brick wall in a classroom and a third discussing lack of storage of sports equipment.
A couple other interesting facts: If North Mason voters had passed this bond in 2002, the cost was $30 million. Enrollment at Hawkins Middle School has increased from 235 in 1983 to 523 in 2008; high school enrollment has gone from 340 to 852 in the same time period.
The district will also have a renewal of its operational levy on the ballot on Feb. 3, but the YouTube videos focus only on the bond.
