I'm posting this for NK resident and former school board member Catherine Ahl. She's had a hard time with comment posting this morning and emailed this to me:

Check out WAC 180-51-061: Minimum requirements for H.S. graduation, 1(e) (i) & (ii) and RCW 28A.230.050. These are the state laws/rules that allowed the NK School Board, when I was a member, to direct the Supt. to instruct the high schools to follow the law and give kids credit for P.E. for participating in school or rec. district sports. We felt that P.E. classes needed to be for kids who were not physically active, not for the sports stars - and this includes members of the marching band. This was not written into policy, just a direction for the Supt. The School Board did this, not the administration, so I would go to the Board.

Choosing between two good things is always harder than choosing between "good" and "bad". "Good" and "bad" is a no-brainer. ;-)

Last year at CK's summer school, there was an Independent Study course for Intro to Fitness. It allowed students to get the PE credit even if they could not physically be present every day at Summer School. If it's offered again, it could work for your son too. Be prepared to fork out $200 for it.

I would rather drop band and take pe than switch to northkitsap of all places in order to stay in band. you would be sorry you'd switch. North Kitsap's band program does not rate anywhere near as well as Central Kitsap, nor does any of their academics. I live in north kitsap district but i switched schools as central kitsap schools are better. You have to have intro to fitness to graduate at ck but i am sure they will waive the other p.e. credit. Even at north kitsap you still need lifelong fitness or something like that to graduate. So you are not getting anywhere sides for getting one .5 credit of p.e. waived.

Your son would NOT "have to drop band in order to get P.E. credits"...he COULD take P.E. during the summer...you need to help him make the choice of "going on our church mission trip and Scout camp" OR of taking the P.E. classes. Are there any other courses you would like to have changed for your son in order for him to meet your own extra curricular wishes? When (if) he gets a job, will you be asking his employer to make adjustments to fit your or his personal wishes? Just wondering. (and no, I'm not a teacher)
