I heard Tuesday that Sharon Ferguson, who filed to run for the North Kitsap School Board seat currently held by Melanie Mohler, would withdraw her name from the ballot. Ferguson confirmed this morning that she will withdraw. A retired NK teacher, Ferguson said she had second thoughts about the time commitment and the four-year term required of board members.
“It’s important work,” said Ferguson, “it’s very important work, maybe just not my important work.”
Ferguson taught in North Kitsap schools for almost 35 years, directing 67 drama productions over the years, before semi-retiring in 2003. She still teaches some AP courses and has assisted with drama productions at the junior-high level.
Officially, Ferguson has until Thursday at 5 pm to rescind her candidacy. When official paperwork is received, the Kitsap County Auditor’s Office will determine when another filing period will be opened, probably in the next week.
Ferguson filed for the position on June 5, the final day of filing for candidates. “I had a lot of community support and people calling me,” she said. “It was a hard decision to make.”
Over the weekend, though, she had second thoughts. Now, she’s working on finding a replacement candidate. If no candidate emerges, the seat will be removed from the November ballot and, in accordance with state law, Mohler would be asked to serve until the next general election in two years. If she declines, the remaining members of the school board would appoint someone to serve in the seat.
The boundaries of District 3 run along Port Madison Bay and Agate Pass from Sandy Hook Road in the south to Gunderson in the north. Mohler has represented District 3 since 2005. She is not running for a second term.
