Four Employers
Nominated for
Freedom Award
ARLINGTON, VA.
Four Kitsap County businesses are in the running for 2010 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Awards. They were nominated for supporting employees who serve in the Washington Guard or Reserves through continued benefits, differential pay and family assistance.
The employers are Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, South Kitsap School District, Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor and Lockheed Martin.
A national selection board comprising senior defense officials and business leaders will select up to 15 winners and announce them this summer. The awards will be presented Sept. 23 at a ceremony at Washington, D.C.

March 11
What: Frank Shiers, who grew up in Kitsap County, will be guest speaker at the March 11 luncheon meeting of the Port Orchard Chamber of Commerce. He began working in radio in Seattle in June 1986 and worked for 97.3 KIRO FM. He returned to doing a regular talk show in late July and hosts Northwest Nights on 97.3 FM.

What: Washington Community Alliance For Self Help (CASH) will hold an eight-week class for spring business development training, which begins March 23 for and continues for eight Tuesdays. Major topics are learning how to start your business; licenses, taxes and insurance; developing the business concept, sales and marketing; calculating the financial break-even point; study of cash flow, pricing and financial statements; and a heavy focus on developing profit and loss statements and making a business profitable.
