Bainbridge Community Foundation Announces Grants
August 25th, 2009 by Rachel PritchettBAINBRIDGE ISLAND
Bainbridge Schools Foundation was among this year’s biggest winners
of grants from the Bainbridge Community Foundation and its
partners.
It won $8,000, and will use the money to fund salaries of
remedial-reading teachers in Bainbridge Island public schools,
according to a new statement from the Bainbridge Community
Foundation.
That grant was among 24 Bainbridge Community Foundation grants
totaling $91,700 given to non-profit groups that provide essential
services.
The other biggest grants were given to the island’s Health, Housing
and Human Services Council, which received $7,500 and will use for
training. That group helps to increase access to essential services
for low-income people.
The Bainbridge Island Special Needs Foundation received $6,800 for
staff and supplies.
Elder and Adult Day Services got $6,000 to help make up for a cut
in Medicaid funding. The group that provides daytime care for older
people and others who need support recently moved to Bainbridge
from Bremerton.
Bainbridge Youth Services and the island’s Housing Resource Board
each got $5,000. The youth group will buy more staff staff hours;
the housing board will replace a roof on low-income housing.
The recession prompted the Bainbridge Community Foundation to award
15 percent more money this year than last. But even so, some
$193,000 in requests went unanswered.
The foundation was begun in 2001 to encourage philanthropic
giving.
