State Agency Fines
Manke Lumber
Tacoma
Manke Lumber Co. of Tacoma was fined $69,000 by the state
Department of Ecology for stormwater problems related to its pellet
mill on Tacoma’s waterfront.
Violations include poor maintenance of the stormwater system,
failing to monitor discharges, storing industrial fluids in the
open, allowing “process water” from an air scrubber to run into a
storm drain and failing to update its pollution prevention plan,
according to Kelly Susewind, Ecology’s Water Quality Program
manager.
“Ecology has tried a number of strategies to get Manke Lumber to
improve its pollution prevention efforts, including face-to-face
conversations, formal letters, penalties and orders,” Susewind
said. “We’re hopeful this penalty will make Manke management
realize we’re serious that they need to comply with their permit
and protect the bay.”
Reached by phone, manager Jim Manke said, “Everything has been
addressed and fixed” before he abruptly hung up the phone.
In addition to the pellet mill, Manke Lumber owns sawmills and
50,000 acres of timberland throughout the Puget Sound region. Manke
Lumber is one of the largest property owners in Kitsap County.
Pope Resources Posts Loss in Second Quarter
POULSBO
Pope Resources has reported a second-quarter loss of $693,000, or
16 cents a share.
That compares with an income gain of $1.7 million, or a gain of 36
cents a share, for the same quarter a year ago.
Blaming reduced timber-harvest level and a slow economy, Pope
President and CEO David Nunes called the second-quarter results
“anemic by any standard.”
Poulsbo-based Pope Resources and its subsidiaries Olympic Resource
Management and Olympic Property Group own and manage 140,000 acres
of timberland and development property.
