Government jobs decrease

This from AP this Friday. Government jobs at all levels are under the knife, and Kitsap’s no exception. I’m awaiting October unemployment rates from state Unemployment Security. A few rates from September:

U.S,. 6.1 percent

Washington State, 5.8 percent

Kitsap County, 5.3 percent

Seattle, 4.6 percent

Mason County, 6.8 percent

Jefferson County, 5.5 percent

OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) — The number of people drawing a state paycheck has dropped by about 1,200 since early August when Gov. Chris Gregoire ordered a hiring freeze.

The Olympian reports much of the decrease is in seasonal jobs with parks or the state Department of Natural Resources.

The state has a total of about 66,000 employees.

There’s an exemption to the hiring freeze for public safety workers. The Department of Corrections has hired nearly 200 people to staff prisons in the past three months, but there are 24 fewer employees at the department’s headquarters in Tumwater.
