And here’s a story from The Columbian about the Rams’ 55-30 win over Skyview last Saturday. Sounds like the Cougs from Silverdale will be game-planning to stop Rogers quarterback Tyler Van Sligtenhorst, who rushed for 280 yards and four touchdowns and threw for two more.

So here I am at the King County Aquatics Center for yet another state swimming championships. This facility is so great for swimming, the sightlines are fabulous and they really treat us media folks well here — free water and chips!!

We are in the final round of 2A diving and the crowd has stuck around to watch the girls. Speaking of the crowd, this has to be one of the largest crowds for a morning session I’ve seen in a while. Nearly every seat is full on both sides of the pool. The line to Subway is about a mile long, so it’s always a good idea to bring your own food.

Not a whole lot going on in the 4A class right now. Jackson leads the team results with a 93 through four events, followed by Garfield, 64, and Skyline, 62. The only local to swim in the finals so far was Gig Harbor’s 200 medley relay. The Tides, including Heide Luong, Kevlyn Richards, Lauren Biggs, and Danielle Ellis, placed fourth in a time of 1:51.92.

There’s only been one state record set and that was by Skyline’s Andie Taylor in the 200-yard individual medley. Taylor finished in a time of 1:58.23. The old record was 2:01.10 set in 1994 by Columbia River’s Kari Edwards.

Gig Harbor’s Taylor Indahl was eighth in 2:10.65.

In 2A, Aberdeen is the leader through four events with a score of 109. Fife (94) is second followed by Anacortes (64). Sequim is tied for 13th with 12 points. Rachel Hardy of Sequim finished seventh in the 50 freestyle in 26.21 seconds. Othello freshman Natilee Ruiz set a new meet record in 23.29. Emily Silver of Bainbridge holds the state record in 22.99 set in 2003.

More to come in a bit …

UPDATE (12:32 p.m.): I have a correction. In today’s short story on yesterday’s prelims I wrote that Klahowya’s Serenity Jensen qualified for today’s finals in the 2A 50 free. Normally, a to 16 finish puts you into the second day. But, for 2A since there are not that many swimmers, they are just swimming main finals.

Also, South Kitsap freshman Nicole Hinely had a fantastic swim, completed moments ago, in the 4A consolation finals of the 100-yard butterfly. Hinely won the event in a time of 58.48, bettering her prelim time of 1:01.11. And she was seeded in lane 1 to boot! That’s a great swim for Hinely.

UPDATE (1:15 p.m.): Jackson’s Amber McDermott just demolished the state record in the 500 freestyle. The old record was 4:49.56 by Corrie Murphy of Highline in 1996. The new record? An astounding 4:41.98.

UPDATE: Chelsea Bailey broke Emily Silver’s record in the 100 free. Bailey, from Kentlake, set the record in 49.82. Silver’s record was 50.16.

UPDATE: North Mason’s Kimberly Wascher was unable to repeat as the 100 back champion in 2A, falling to whiz kid Natilee Ruiz of Othello. Ruiz set a meet record in 55.70, followed by Wascher in 1:02.48.

UPDATE (5:42 p.m.): We’re just minutes away from the start of the 3A meet. A couple notes, Mark Moschetti, a longtime sports reporter for the Valley newspapers in Kent, who has been covering the state swim meet in one form or another for more than three decades, was inducted into the Washington Interscholastic Swim Coaches Assocation.

Congrats Mark! You’re invaluable insights and ability to figure out who was in the lead after the first day of prelims made all of us look smart.

UPDATE (5:53 p.m.): The Spartans got off to an extremely fast swim in the first event of the night, the 200 medley relay. Bainbridge smashed its own prelim time of 2:01.57 to finish fourth overall in 1:54.32.

UPDATE (6:23 p.m.): Emily Silver is no longer a state record-holder. Leona Jennings of Mount Rainier just broke Silver’s record in the 50 free. Jennings finished in 22.92, beating Silver’s 22.99 set in 2003. Earlier in the day, Silver’s record in the 100 free fell as well.

The only Kitsap swimmer to hold state records is Dana Kirk of Bremerton. Kirk holds the 100 butterfly record in 53.99 .

UPDATE (8:32 p.m.): With the meet nearly over, the 400 free relay is upcoming, Peninsula coach Craig Brown earned the WISCA coach of the year. The swimmer of the meet was Lindsey Marchand of Peninsula.

Kennedy won the 3A team title with 310 points. Bainbridge finished in sixth place with 158 and North Kitsap, behind freshman Bethany Aban, placed 32nd overall.

That’s it from KCAC folks. Enjoy your weekend!
