Here’s the highlight for Kitsap at the state track and field
meets.
Olympic won the boys team title.
Oly’s best finish was by Zach Smith won the 200 in a West Sound
record time of 21.69. That lowered his own record. Smith was also
second in the 100 at 10.64, which is just off the West Sound record
of 10.62.
Central Kitsap’s Rose Christen was second in the 800, shattering
last year’s state record in 2:05.64. She was second to Camas’ Alexa
Efraimson who has the record in 2:04.10.
Central Kitsap’s Hudson Keffer was second in the 4A boys javelin at
192-8. Teammate Spencer Claeys was fourth at 179-0.
Kingston’s Garrett Rouser won the 2A boys title in the 300 hurdles
in 37.97.

His first throw, 160-10, was the winner.
Teammate Marcus Burk was fifth at 154-11.
VanAmen won the national junior title in the event last year.
Blind pole vaulter takes fourth at Texas state meet
Too bad she’s not from Washington. Fourth place will get you a medal here. In Texas, apparently only top three get a medal. You can read about her here.

Young track stars taking state by storm
There’s a few underclass track stars around Kitsap that should
be interesting to watch as the postseason hits next month.
South Kitsap freshman Nolan VanAmen, who broke a national junior
record over the summer, also broke the school record in the discus
at 172-7. That’s also the best mark in the state.
VanAmen is putting up huge numbers for a freshman. The West Sound
record is 188-1 (set by Bainbridge’s Matt Wauters in 2004), and
that seems sure to fall before he’s done. The state record for a freshman is 176-6 (set by
Lynnwood’s Ben Lindsey in 1993) and that seems a good bet to
fall.
The state record is 207-2.
He’s also fourth in the shot put at 54-3. The state
freshman record is 58-1.75 (set by Spokane’s Mike Shill in 1977)
and that also is in reach.
Olympic sophomore Jaleel Elmore broke the school record in the
400 with a 49.45 last weekend (old record was 49.74 (conv) set by
Andrew Cole in 1999). The mark is the best in the state so far this season.
Central Kitsap’s Cameron Carroll, who we wrote about in today’s paper, is fifth in the state in the
800.
North Mason sophomore Tegan Daviscort is 11th in the state in the
200 at 25.96.
Lil Norway meet will be dedicated to Stenerson
The Lil’ Norway Invitational track and field meet
on Saturday at North Kitsap will be dedicated to former coach Gordy
Stenerson.
Stenerson was the boys track and field coach at NK for 20 years
(1973-92). He also assisted the girls program for two years in the
1990s.
The Vikings were fourth at state in 1977 under Stenerson.
He will be honored at a ceremony before the meet begins at 10:50
a.m. The meet, which features 13 teams, including most of the teams
around West Sound, begins at 11 a.m.
South Kitsap’s VanAmen makes big debut
In his first high school track and field meet on Thursday, South Kitsap freshman Nolan
VanAmen had a big debut.
He won the shot put at 51-4.5 and he won the discus at 169-10,
which broke the school record.
His brother Chandler won the javelin at 159-0.
Nolan VanAmen made headlines over the summer for winning national
titles in the shot put and discus and breaking discus records.
SK cancels Kurt Wagner Memorial Relays
Chris Chancellor, hard-working sports reporter for the Port Orchard Independent, wrote Monday that South Kitsap High School will not be holding the Kurt Wagner Memorial Relays, which were scheduled for Saturday. SK athletic director Ed Santos told Chancellor that not enough school were willing to participate in the event.
The Kurt Wagner Memorial Relays — formerly known as the South Kitsap Relays until 2013 — were named after the former South Kitsap School District deputy superintendent who died of cancer in 2012.
West Sound track and field record book rewritten this year
There were so many records broken by West Sound track and field
athletes — and some I’m just catching up with — in the last few
weeks, I wanted to recap.
Let’s start with North Mason’s CJ Allen. He broke the Class 2A
state meet record and lowered his West Sound record in the 300
hurdles. Allen ran a 37.28 in Friday’s prelims. The old record was
37.79. It was also the best time in the state this season.
Allen broke the West Sound record earlier this season. It was held
by Central Kitsap’s Dom Demouchet at 37.82.
He was close to the West Sound record in the 110 hurdles. South
Kitsap’s Roger Cooper, who made to a couple NFL training camps
after a successful career at Montana State, holds the record at
14.14. Allen ran a 14.34.
Reagan Colyer broke her West Sound record in the 100 hurdles at
14.88 at districts. In the 300 hurdles, she was faster than the
Class 2A state meet record, but was second place. The 43.44 lowered
her own West Sound record of 43.56 set last season.
Central Kitsap’s Michael Thomas lowered his West Sound record in
the 400 with a 47.83. There’s been an assault on that record this
year as Thomas, Allen and South Kitsap’s LaForrest Church have all
beaten it.
The previous record was a hand-timed 49.0 (49.24 converted) set by
Jeff Ellison of East Bremerton in 1977 and Scott Christensen or
Port Angeles in 1966.
Church anchored South Kitsap’s 4×400 relay which broke the West
Sound record at 3:18.39 (along with Adam Gascoyne, Zach Sleigh and
Mason Villarma). A South Kitsap team from 1988 had run a 3:20.05.
Church (1:51.82) was also close to the 800 record.
Central Kitsap’s Rose Christen broke the West Sound record in the
800 at the district meet at 2:10.24. That breaks the record of Port
Angeles’ Penny Graves, who ran a 2:10.98 in 1983. She was also
close to the 1,600 record (4:53.91).
Central Kitsap (Destiny Dunbar, Keyera Gaulden, Kendra Fields,
Jasmine Leaptrot) broke the record in the 4×200 relay in 1:43.76 at
the Narrows League meet. It beat the Central Kitsap team that
posted a 1:43.82 in 1991.
Correction: This post originally indicated that CK’s had broken the
girls 4×100 relay record with a 48.88. North Kitsap still holds the
record with the 48.49 set two year ago.
Also, Olympic sprinter Zach Smith was omitted. Smith ran a 21.60 at
the state meet, one of three runners to go under the Class 2A state
meet time. Smith beat the 1978 record set by Bremerton’s Jerome
Walker. Walker ran a hand-time 21.6, which converts to a 21.9.
All told, that’s eight record broken this season.
Here’s a look at the updated West Sound record book:
A busy early morning on the Mount Tahoma track
UPDATE: Central Kitsap’s Michael Thomas won the Class 4A boys
400 in a West Sound record time off 47.84 (unofficial).
Another West Sound record fell as South Kitsap boys won the 4×400
relay in 3:18.39. An SK relay team had the record since 1988 at
3:30.05.
We’ve seen state titles and state records broken from West Sound
track and field athletes. Let’s get you caught up:
In the 2A girls 300 hurdles, North Kitsap’s Reagan Colyer broke the
2A state meet record, but ended up in second place. Colyer, the
defending state champ in the event, ran in 43.44. Sehome’s Hanna
Tarleton won in 43.20. The old record was 43.80.
North Mason’s CJ Allen broke the meet record in his 300 hurdle race
and got the state title. Allen, who broke the record in the prelims
on Friday, ran a 37.33. The record before the weekend was
37.79.
Another record that fell was the girls 800 as Camas’ Alexa
Efraimson, who broke the overall state meet record in the 1,600 on
Thursday, did the same in 2:08.17. Central Kitsap’s Rose Christen
was second in 2:10.35.
South Kitsap’s LaForrest Church won the 4A boys 800 title in
1:51.82. That’s the top time in the state this season.
Olympic’s Zach Smith was second in the 2A boys 100.
Central Kitsap’s Hudson Keffer took second in the 4A boys
javelin.
I’ll be back with more later.
