Developing the district soccer picture
Class 3A West Central/Southwest District
Bracket: here
Who: Central Kitsap (10-4-2) vs. TBD
When: Thursday, 5:30 p.m. at Stadium HS
Berths to state available: Six
Outlook: A three-game winless skid toward the end of the regular season cost Central Kitsap the Narrows League 3A title. Capital took first and secured a state berth, while Central Kitsap must win two loser-out games to reach state for the fifth time in six seasons. The Cougars face the winner of Tuesday’s game between Shelton and Peninsula.
Class 2A West Central District
Bracket: Here
Who: Kingston (14-1-1) vs. Lindbergh (15-0-1)
When: Thursday, 7:30 p.m. at Highline Memorial Stadium
Berths to state available: Six
Outlook: Kingston won the Olympic League 2A title. The Buccaneers are assured of a berth to state for the fourth consecutive year. Seeding is the remaining question mark. Kingston could take first, second, third — which would all mean a home game in the first round of state — or sixth.
Who: Sequim (11-5-0) vs. Foster (5-7-3)
When: Thursday, 5:30 p.m. at Bonney Lake HS
Outlook: Sequim placed second in the Olympic League 2A. The Wolves would clinch a berth to state with a win over Foster and face the winner of Kingston-Lindbergh for seeding. A loss to Foster and Sequim’s season is done.
Who: North Kitsap (8-4-2) vs. TBD
When: Thursday, 7 p.m. at North Kitsap
Outlook: North Kitsap placed third in the Olympic League 2A and faces a loser-out game between winner of Tuesday’s game between Sammamish and Clover Park. The Vikings need two victories to secure their seventh state berth in the past eight seasons.
Who: Port Angeles (9-6-1) vs. Washington (7-8-0)
When: Tuesday, 5 p.m. at Silverdale Stadium
Outlook: Port Angeles took fourth in the Olympic League 2A and needs to win three loser-out games in order to reach state for the first time since 2012.
Class 1A West Central District
Bracket: Here
Who: Klahowya (14-1-1) vs. Vashon (9-2-4)
When: Tuesday, 7 p.m. at Silverdale Stadium
Berths available to state: Two
Outlook: Klahowya placed fourth state last year and repeated as Olympic League 1A champions. The Eagles can earn a berth to state by going 2-0 or 2-1 this week.
Who: Port Townsend (9-6-1) vs. Charles Wright (10-3-0)
When: Tuesday, 6:30 p.m. at Harry Lang Stadium, Lakewood
Outlook: The Redhawks knocked out Seattle Christian 2-0 on Saturday and now face the Nisqually League champs.
Kingston’s Barrett headed to Ohio Wesleyan
Kingston senior Alex Barrett is helping the Buccaneers’ undefeated soccer team while eagerly awaiting his football career on the next level.
Barrett, who scored two goals for Kingston in Tuesday’s Olympic League 2A showdown at Port Angeles, recently committed to play football at Ohio Wesleyan, a NCAA Division III school in Delaware, Ohio.
“I’m excited,” said Barrett, who rushed for 459 yards and six touchdowns for Kingston’s football team in the fall.
The 6-foot-1, 220-pound Barrett expects to play running back at the next level.
NK’s Rabedeaux named Oly 2A MVP
North Kitsap senior guard Cole Rabedeaux was named the Class 2A All-Olympic League MVP on Tuesday.
Rabedeaux, a 6-foot-1 senior, averaged 22.4 points per game and helped the Vikings earn a spot at regionals. North Kitsap coach Scott Orness was named the coach of the year. The Sequim Wolves won the sportsmanship award.
In 1A, Port Townsend’s Detrius Kelsall, a 6-0 sophomore guard/forward, was tabbed as the MVP while the sportsmanship award went to Klahowya. Chimacum coach Jim Eldridge was named the coach of the year.

Monzon, Wheeler named co-MVP for All-Oly 2A girls team
Olympic guard Danielle Monzon and Port Angeles center/forward Nizhoni Wheeler were named co-MVPs for the 2A All-Olympic League girls basketball teams.
Monzon, a 5-foot-2 junior, helped lead the Trojans to the West Central District tournament and Wheeler, a 6-1 junior, guided the Roughriders to a regional berth.
North Kitsap coach Penny Ginger was named the 2A coach of the year and North Mason won the sportsmanship award.
In 1A, Makana Stone of Coupeville was tabbed as the MVP while Scott Wilson of Port Townsend was named the coach of the year. Coupeville also won the sportsmanship award.

Two Kitsap gymnasts earn state medals
Kingston sophomore Mikka Yamane was eighth on the balance beam with a 9.100 Saturday at the Class 3A/2A state gymnastics event finals at the Tacoma Dome Exhibition Hall.
Yamane became the first Kingston gymnasts to make the finals (top 16) and became the first to earn a state medal (top eight).
Bainbridge’s Remi Rosencrans was eighth on the bars at 9.100.
State swimming: updates from day 2

Kingston proved they could walk the walk after all.
The Buccaneers earned their first state championship in school history on Saturday when the 200-yard medley relay won the Class 2A event in 1 minute, 43.08 seconds.
The boys program split off from North Kitsap in 2008-09 and has been progressing each year. The Bucs won the Olympic League and district meet titles this year, also firsts for the program.
The school opened in 2007 and co-oped its swimming program with North Kitsap that first year.
It’s been quite a meet so far for the peninsula . Kitsap has been on the medal podium in every event.

Kitsap wound up with three second-place finishers in Olympic’s Ross Burchell, Bremerton’s Nathan Rubie and Kingston’s Tim Gallagher.
Burchell finished second in the 200 freestyle in 1:45.86, a personal best and the 500 freestyle in 4:42.39.
Bremerton’s Rubie finished second in the 100 butterfly. Rubie touched the wall in 52.93, closing in on Elliott Hofferth of Anacortes in the final 10 yards to make it entertaining.
Gallagher, a freshman, was second in the 100 backstroke in 53.54. In total, West Sound walked away with 22 medals in 12 events.
Kingston finished in fourth place in the team standings, giving the Bucs their first state trophy. North Kitsap placed seventh while Olympic was 12th. Klahowya was 24th and Bremerton 28th.

The 3A session saw the Bainbridge Spartans earn a second place finish overall with 288 points to Bellevue’s 349.5. It’s the Spartans best finish since 1980, when they also finished second.
The Spartans’ 200 medley and 200 free relays placed second while the 400 free relay was third.
Individually, Garrett Waite had two top four finishes to lead the Spartans. Waite was third in the 200 IM and fourth in the 100 backstroke.
Other top finishers for Bainbridge were junior Parker Bushey who finished fifth in the 200 freestyle, freshmen Kevin Houseman, fifth in 200 IM and 100 breaststroke, Makai Ingalls placed sixth in the 100 butterfly and eighth in the 50 free, and Carter Hall was eighth in the breast.

The 4A meet is underway and South Kitsap’s Dylan Macabitas, who opened the session by singing the national anthem, placed fourth in the 100 backstroke in 52.67, just off his personal best from prelims (52.28). Macabitas also finished 12th in the 200 freestyle.

South diver Jason Gleason finished seventh in his first meet. He’s a junior and is determined to improve on that ranking next season.
State boys swimming & diving: Day 1
The Kingston Buccaneers are off to a hot start at the state Class 2A boys swimming and diving championships Friday morning at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.
The Buccaneers won their heat in the 200-yard medley relay in 1:43.22 and are the top seed heading into Saturday’s finals.
North Kitsap is seeded seventh in the same event and will get a medal tomorrow.
Solid first day for 2A. Kingston qualified all 13 of their swimmers into the finals, a first for coach Mark Van Huis he said. Kingston’s Ethan Fox is seeded fourth in the 200 IM after winning his heat in 2:01.10 while teammate Tim Gallagher is seeded fifth. Gallagher is also eyeing a state title in the 100 backstroke as he is the second seed. Fox is seeded third in the 100 breast. Kingston’s 400 free relay is the third seed.
Klahowya’s Mason Heaman is into the finals in the 200 freestyle as the fifth seed.
Olympic’s Ross Burchell is seeded fourth in the 200 free, but is the second seed in the 500 free. The Trojans’ 400 free relay is seeded sixth.
North Kitsap’s Thor Breitbarth, coming off an illness at last week’s district meet, is seeded fifth in the 50 free and seventh in the 100 free. North’s Nathan Ramey is seeded fifth in the 100 breast and seventh in the 500 free.
Bremerton sophomore Nathan Rubie is seeded fourth in the 100 butterfly and he had to race in a swim-off for the 200 IM. He had tied with Chris Kim of Fife and wound up beating Kim in the two-man race to qualify for the consolation finals.

The 3A state meet began this afternoon and after a couple of disqualifications early (not involving Bainbridge) the Spartans three relays qualified as the second seeds — right behind Bellevue
Freshmen Garrett Waite is seeded third in the 200 IM and 100 back. Senior Sam Alpaugh is seeded sixth in the backstroke.
Freshman Kevin Houseman is the fourth seed in the 100 breast while Carter Hall is seeded seventh.
Divers Dylan Garthwaite and Gabe Emert each made the finals as did senior distance freestyler James Bullock.

We only had two individual qualifiers from South Kitsap as well as the Wolves’ 200 medley relay. The relay, which consisted of Dylan Macabitas, Giacomo Bressanello, Simon Martin, Matthew Martin, finished in 1:45.35. They did not qualify for the finals.
Macabitas qualified fifth in the 100 backstroke and 14th in the 200 free. Diver Jason Gleason is seeded sixth heading into the finals with a score of 253.70 after a strong performance in the prelims and semifinals. Top seed Jeffrey Goong of Bothell scored 264.80.
Kingston wins district swimming title
Kingston won the Class 2A West Central District swimming and diving champions at Hazen High in Renton.
The Bucs, who won their first Olympic League title last month, scored 195 points, barely edging out Steilacoom, which scored 194.5.
Kingston had three titles. Quincy Walker won the 100 free title in 50.49. Ethan Fox won the 100 breast in 1:02.75. They were both part of the winning 400 free relay team along with George Dalton and Tim Gallagher in 3:27.76.
Olympic’s Ross Burchell won the 200-yard freestyle title.
Burchell touched the wall in 1 minute, 51 seconds, edging Klahowya’s Mason Heaman’s 1:51.78.
Burchell also won the 500 freestyle title in 4:55.90, just ahead of North Kitsap’s Nathan Ramey (4:58.43).
Bremerton’s Nathan Rubie won the 100 fly title in 54.32.
2A WCD psych sheets revealed
Olympic’s Ross Burchell is seeded No. 1 in the 200-yard freestyle for the upcoming Class 2A West Central District boy swim and dive meet.
The meet is at Hazen pool in Renton. Friday’s prelims begin at 10 a.m. and Saturday’s finals are at noon.
Burchell, a freshman, has a seeding time of one minute, 50.79 seconds — right ahead of Klahowya freshman Mason Heaman in 1:51.34. Burchell is also seeded second in the 500 free.
Bremerton’s Nathan Rubie is the top seed in the 100 butterfly in 54.70 while North Kitsap senior Thor Breitbarth is also seeded first in the 100 freestyle in 50.28 — ahead of sophomore Quincy Walker of Kingston and Heaman (third). Breitbarth is seeded second in the 50 free.
Kingston freshmen Ethan Fox and Tim Gallagher are seeded second and third in the 200 individual medley. Gallagher is also seeded second in the 100 backstroke and Fox is seeded second in the 100 breaststroke. Nathan Ramey, a freshman from North Kitsap, is the third seed in the 500 free.
Also, Kingston’s and North Kitsap’s 200 medley relays are seeded second and third, respectively. Kingston is the top seed in the 200 free relay as well and is the second seed in the 400 free relay.
