Bainbridge’s Sam Warkentin, the defending Class 3A state champ, shot a 69 in the first round of the state golf tournament and has a shot lead heading into the final day.
Central Kitsap freshman Brittany Kwon shot a 77 and is tied for third, a shot back of the leader at the Class 3A girls tournament.

Central Kitsap’s hopes of challenging for a state baseball title crashed and burned as the Cougars lost 14-1 to Lynnwood in the first round of the Class 3A tournament Saturday at Rister Stadium in Kelso.
Central Kitsap (22-3) allowed seven runs in the top of the first inning. It took the Cougars 29 minutes and 60 pitches to record three outs. Starting pitcher Griffin McCormick recorded only one out before being relieved by Matt Vessey.
Lynnwood (16-8) tacked on four runs in the third inning and three runs in the fourth as the Royals advanced to face Southridge in the quarterfinals.
Central Kitsap, which finished third at state in 2015, scored
its lone run in the fourth inning.
The game was delayed 45 minutes due to rain.
The Bainbridge softball team qualified for state for the 10th straight year, beating Ballard 4-3 in nine innings Friday in the Class 3A SeaKing District tournament at the Southwest Athletic Complex in Seattle.
It took a big rally to make it. Bainbridge was down 3-0 heading into the bottom of the seventh. Maddie Loverich’s two-out, two-run triple tied the game.
Kari Perry’s two-out single scored the winning run in the ninth. Sara Colley went the distance, giving up just six hits.
Bainbridge (14-11) took the district’s fifth and final spot to state by beating a Ballard (18-8) team that finished second in the Metro League and swept them in the regular season.
South Kitsap junior Nolan Van Amen broke the school record in the shot put on Thursday at the Class 4A West Central District meet in Kent.
Van Amen, the defending state champ in the event, threw 59 feet, 10.5 inches to win the district title and advance to next week’s state meet.
The old record was 59-4.25 set by Gene Daunais in 1970. Van Amen entered the meet No. 3 on the list. No. 2 was SK throws coach Renard Williams, who threw 59-3 en route to a state title in 2007.
The West Sound record is 64-8.5 set by Bainbridge’s Matt Wauters in 2004.

districts, Central Kitsap is the only Kitsap team in the final
state baseball rankings. The Cougars, who will play in state
Saturday, are No. 2.

Phil Pugh is returning as football coach at North Mason High School.
It’ll be the third stint as coach and he’ll be coaching at the stadium named after him.
He’s a member of the Washington State Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame and Kitsap Sports Hall of Fame.
Pugh was 162-107 in 27 years at North Mason and he led the Bulldogs to the Class A state title in 1982. He coached from 1974 to 1994 before retiring. He returned and coached from 2004-09.
Pugh’s replacement, Jeff Bevers, stepped down following the season after six years and a 22-38 record. Bevers is the track and field coach at North Mason.
