–5:46 p.m.: So far, seven locals have made the semifinals: Central Kitsap’s Alison Johnson, Kingston’s Peyton Reece, Bobby Reece and Aaron Dickson, South Kitsap’s Adam Lutovsky, Klahowya’s Brian Burchett and Port Angeles’ Ozzy Swagerty
–2:06 p.m.: Of the 49 locals who wrestled in the opening round, 30 won and 19 lost.
–1:17 p.m.: First big upset (at least on paper) of the day: Central Kitsap heavyweight Dominick Johnson, who won a region title last week, lost to Auburn’s Jacob Apodaca in the first round 10-6. Lunch break coming up pretty soon here.
–12:46 p.m.: South Kitsap’s Amberlee Brasch is our third girl in the quarterfinals. In the boys tournament, Kingston’s Bobby Reece gets his day started off right, pinning Lake Washington’s Eduard Kravchuk in the first round. Three more wins and Reece is a four-time state champ.
–11:17 a.m.: Early win/loss count, local wrestlers have won 7/11 matches. A hot start. A cold media room….
–11:09 a.m.: South Kitsap’s Brandon Forster won his opener to set up a quarterfinal with defending state champion Timmy Martinez of Pasco.
–11:05 a.m.: Continuing at the girls tournament, Kingston’s Peyton Reece gets into the quarters with a pin of Regina Bell of White Salmon with one second left in the match. Things were scoreless headed into the third period.
–10:25 a.m.: Central Kitsap’s Alison Johnson was the first local wrestler to pick up a victory Friday. She pinned Kaitlyn Kroneman of Rogers in the second period.
–8:48 a.m.: Ran into South Kitsap coach Chad Nass. Asked him what his kids do for food throughout the day. He said when he first started coaching, kids would buy their own food, usually burgers and nachos. Then they’d wrestle poorly. For years, SK’s booster club has provided coolers with more nutritious food. Who wants to pay $9 for a burger and fries anyway?!
–8:30 a.m.: Just arrived at the Tacoma Dome about 15 minutes ago for Mat Classic. The media room was empty (I think some photographers were out on the floor) and received media badge No. 13. That means it’s going to be a good weekend, right?
