Volleyball redux and a look ahead

With the first week of Olympic League action underway, let’s take a look at how teams are stacking up so far.

North Kitsap, the only team in the area ranked in the statewide coaches poll at No. 9 in 2A, is tied for first with Port Angeles (4-3) and Sequim (5-4) at 2-0 in league play.

The Vikings (7-0 overall) were pushed hard by Klahowa (4-3 overall, 0-2) earlier this week but prevailed in a 3-2 win. NK then beat North Mason (1-7, 0-1) in straight games, 3-0.

Port Angeles picked up wins against Olympic (2-6, 0-2) and Port Townsend (2-5, 1-1) while Sequim had wins over Kingston (3-3, 1-1) and Klahowya.

Kingston follows the three unbeaten teams in the league standings in the fourth spot and Port Townsend is fifth, but North Mason would get that fifth playoff spot since the Redskins are a 1A team. Obviously there could still be a lot of movement in the standings, but I don’t think the Vikings are going to move, so the rest of the league will be fighting for the four remaining playoff spots.

In the 4A Narrows League, Bellarmine Prep, the No. 1 ranked team in the state, are the clear favorites, followed by Olympia and Gig Harbor.

Central Kitsap is currently sitting in fourth place followed by South Kitsap. The battle for the fourth and final playoff spot will come down to rivals South and CK. The Cougars won the first meeting between the two teams, 3-2. The two will meet again on Oct. 15 and SK would need to get the win to earn the split in head-to-head competition.

I wouldn’t be surprised at all if these two teams had to have a tiebreaker of some sort.

As far as Bainbridge goes, they definitely control their own destiny. The Spartans, the lone Kitsap school in the Metro League, are playing very well and are coming off a strong 3-2 win over Eastside Catholic on Thursday. The Spartans (5-0) and seventh-ranked Seattle Prep (8-0, 6-0) are the only unbeaten teams in the Mountain Division.

I’m surprised Bainbridge hasn’t cracked into the top 10 in the 3A rankings yet. Holy Names is ranked fourth and are 2-3 (3-4 overall). Maybe a win over Prep come Tuesday will get them in there.

Taking a looking ahead, some key matches coming this week:

The biggest one will be Bainbridge at Seattle Prep. Both teams are undefeated in the Mountain Division and the winner takes control with just a few games remaining.

Central Kitsap will be tested when the Cougars face Olympia, also Tuesday.

Port Townsend could shake things up in the OL if they can produce a win over Kingston as that looks to be the only match that could go either way.

Thursday’s matches don’t have a big ticket feel, but there are some possibilities. Olympic, still seeking its first league win, takes on North Mason, also looking for its first win, while Klahowya is at Port Townsend. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Eagles can pick up a win in PT.
