Previewing South Kitsap football vs. Newport

September 10th, 2013 by jeff graham

South Kitsap hosting KingCo 4A contender Newport is the Kitsap Sun’s Game of the Week this Friday. Here is a bit of info on Newport, which went to the Class 4A state tournament last season, losing in the first round to Mead 41-14.

The Wolves managed to knock off Newport 33-27 on the road last season. Bryce Broome’s 54-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter stood as the game-winner.

I remember thinking it was a nice victory at the time. But a year later, I’m even more impressed considering how well Newport did last year. The Knights beat some pretty teams (Skyview, Woodinville) with senior quarterback Isaac Dotson (now at WSU) running the show.

The big (BIG) name to look for this year is junior lineman Calvin Throckmorton is Newport’s 6-foot-6, 275-pound lineman. Can’t confirm, but I’m hearing UW and Boise State are two of his top suitors.
