Chimacum High School was forced to cancel its first football game of the season due to a low number of eligible players.
The school announced Tuesday on Twitter that it had canceled its Sept. 5 season opener with Forks at Jefferson County Stadium. Chimacum head coach Shawn Meacham confirmed the announcement.
“Administration canceled the game,” Meacham said. “There was a couple of injuries at practice and that brought the numbers down.”
Chimacum has been struggling with low turnouts for football the past couple of seasons. The team has had fewer than 20 players on the team the past two seasons, despite being competitive within the Class 1A Nisqually League.
The game with Forks was a non-league contest. Forks is looking for another opponent for its season opener.
The cancellation means that Chimacum’s first game will be Sept. 13 against Klahowya at Silverdale Stadium.
