Confidence important in postseason contestsFebruary 21st, 2013 by jeff graham
Spending a little time with Olympic’s boys basketball team this week, I wondered how the Trojans felt going into Saturday’s Class 2A regional game against Clover Park (6 p.m. at Kent Meridian HS).
At Wednesday’s practice, Olympic’s players seemed loose. There was a good bit of laughing, as if Saturday’s game is just another game.
It’s not just another game, of course, as the winner advances to the state tournament and gets to play in the Tacoma Dome, while the loser’s season is over, done, finished.
Although Clover Park will be favored, the Trojans didn’t appear to be in awe when watching the Warriors on film. Olympic’s players are confident they can play with the 2011 state champions.
I think that’s big. The Trojans like to get up and down the floor and really bring the pressure defensively, so I’m guessing that might help players get the blood flowing and shake off any early nerves. And Olympic has been a better team in the second half of games this season, so if Saturday’s game is close at halftime, I’d expect it to remain that way until the final buzzer.
