Kingston wrestler Reece suffers first defeat
January 16th, 2013 by jeff grahamKingston junior wrestler Bobby Reece III suffered the first loss
of his high school career Tuesday in the Buccaneers’ dual match at
Olympic High School.
Reece, who came into the night with a career record of 102-0, was
disqualified after referees determined that he used an illegal move
during his 170-pound match against Olympic’s Zeke Gaeta.
Reece, a two-time state champion, led Gaeta 12-1 in the second
period when he used a figure-four leg lock on Gaeta’s head in a pin
attempt. Normally, an illegal move results in a penalty point and
the match continues.
In this case, Gaeta hurt his neck and was carried off the mat on a
stretcher, unable to continue. Gaeta was awarded the victory
because an illegal move ended the match.
Gaeta had an MRI test at the hospital, which came back negative.
Olympic coach Troy Reynolds said Gaeta was diagnosed with a muscle
strain.
Reynolds called the outcome of the match — from Gaeta’s injury to
Reece’s loss — “unfortunate.”
Kingston coach Bobby Reece, while disappointed, said his son will
be fine.
“He handled it pretty well,” the coach said.
