The Matman wrestling tournament at Central Kitsap is regarded as one of the state’s toughest regular season events.
It just got tougher with the addition of three-time state champion Jake Velarde of North Kitsap.
Central Kitsap wrestling coach Mike Harter said that because Decatur dropped out of the tournament at the last minute, he was able to add several wrestlers from North Kitsap, which normally doesn’t compete at Matman. Velarde will be joined by North Kitsap heavyweight Brenden Best and 138-pounder Josh Tucker.
Saturday’s tournament begins at 10 a.m., and the finals are scheduled for 5 p.m. The teams competing are Central Kitsap, Olympic, South Kitsap, Lake Stevens, Bethel, Enumclaw, Orting, Rogers, Graham-Kapowsin, Mount Spokane, AC Davis, Tahoma, Shelton, Lake Washington and Auburn Riverside.
I’ll have a feature on Olympic’s Gaeta brothers coming out later this week.
