Swimming update: Bainbridge’s Archer latest Ironman, CK’s Avery seeded second into district meet

October 23rd, 2012 by Annette Griffus

Bainbridge junior Shayla Archer joined a growing list of West Sound swimmers who have attained Ironman status.

Archer qualified for all eight individual state events this season, the last coming at the Southwest Washington Invite in Longview over the weekend. Bainbridge won the invite with 824.5 points over second place Camas, 437.

Also, Bainbridge diver Shannon Engelbrecht, who had already qualified for the state meet, better her points total to 401.1 in an 11-dive qualifier over the weekend. The Spartans host their last league meet Holy Names Tuesday.

Central Kitsap junior Sarah Avery is seeded second in the 100-yard breaststroke at the Class 4A West Central District swimming meet. The preliminaries are Friday with finals Saturday at Curtis High School.

Avery is seeded behind Gig Harbor’s Carolyn McCann. She is also seeded fourth in the 50 free and eighth in the 200 individual medley. CK’s 200 freestyle relay and 400 free relay are both seeded No. 1, over Mount Rainier and Gig Harbor, respectively. Gig Harbor won the Narrows League championship last weekend.

South Kitsap’s Zoe DeSmet is seeded fourth in the 200 freestyle.
