SK football coach Canton goes headset-less

September 4th, 2012 by jeff graham

One thing I noticed about first-year coach Eric Canton at last week’s South Kitsap football game struck me as different.

He doesn’t use a headset, which is the norm for most football coaches at all levels of the sport.

After watching his Wolves beat Kentridge 42-20, Canton, who coached the second half without any game notes, said he finds headsets — which most coaches use in order to stay in communication with other coaches — distracting.

“I don’t like all the garbage going on,” Canton said. “I can’t stand it.”

Canton, who watched his team commit 12 penalties and looked heated after a few of them, said working without a headset will probably save his school some money in the long run.

“I probably would end up breaking a headset or two,” he joked.
