North Mason seeking new wrestling coach

August 1st, 2012 by jeff graham

After five seasons at North Mason, wrestling coach Tony Coppinger felt he needed to do something else. He resigned about a month ago, not knowing if he’ll ever get back into coaching.
“I’m ready for something new,” Coppinger said. “I’m ready for another adventure.”
Under Coppinger, the Bulldogs won one Olympic League title, one regional title and twice finished as regional runner-up. He also coached Zac Joaquin to a state title in 2011, the same year the Bulldogs took eighth as a team at Mat Classic.
Coppinger, who works in the South Kitsap School District, said moving from Belfair to Silverdale last year made commuting to and from North Mason tough on him.
He said it was hard to decide to leave coaching, but feels it’s the right decision.
“It’s a good time to leave,” he said. “I’m not leaving the cupboard bare. There’s a good junior group coming back.”
