This story brought tears to my eyes

February 2nd, 2012 by cstark

I never met Pat Fitterer, currently the boys basketball coach at Ellensburgh High, but I feel like I know him.

Fitterer used to be the head coach at Highland, where former Sun sportswriter Roger Underwood attended high school. Don’t know if I’ve met a better storyteller than Roger, who told a lot of stories about Fitterer over the years.

Now he’s written a piece about the coach he admires so much,  and it’s one of the best stories I’ve read in a long time.

It details how Pat Fitterer is dealing with coaching — this is his 35th year — without his wife, Kathy, who died last June.

It’s inspiring to read about how his team and his family have rallied behind him.

If you’re a coach, and you’re happily married, you gotta read this story.
