How Central Kitsap was ranked 10th and quickly became unranked
February 1st, 2012 by nathan joyceYou might see some early versions of the Associated Press state
basketball poll that show the Central Kitsap boys ranked 10th in
the Class 4A state poll.
That may surprise you, since CK, while a fine team bound for the
postseason, has more losses (six) than any other ranked team.
It surprised me when I got to the office this afternoon and saw the
poll in my inbox. Looking at it, an explanation hit me. Somebody
(or somebodies) meant to vote for Central Valley (in Spokane, which
is ranked fourth) instead. The AP voting, which is done by media
members across the state, is done on a website with a pull-down
menu of teams. As only two teams begin with “Central,” it’s not too
hard to click on the wrong team.
I called the Associated Press to discuss the poll and see if an
error was made. They said they’d take a look and call me back.
Less than 10 minutes later, I got a call. It was possible I was
correct, they said. Somebody did vote for Central Kitsap at No. 5
instead of Central Valley.
It was me.
So, AP changed my vote. Central Valley remained fourth and CK was
removed from the rankings.
And a valuable lesson was learned: Slow down when filling out
Associated Press state poll ballots.
And sorry to the Cougars for, possibly, getting your hopes up about
making the state rankings.

I am glad I knew Central Kitsap was a 4A team or I would still be scrolling down 12 polls looking for Central Valley. I mean 6 because you mentioned boys and not girls.

Same issue was also happening at Washington Wrestling Report… up until recently, anyway. Central Kitsap’s wrestling team was being ranked in between 15-20 every week, when it was supposed to be Central Valley!
In one of last year’s Seattle Times’ rankings, South Kitsap was being tagged as being in Poulsbo. It took me two emails to the Times to correct that.
Mount Tahoma is often confused as Tahoma and Mount Rainier on many web sites.
I could go on and on…
