Pitch Counts for High School Pitchers

November 29th, 2010 by cstark

It’s hardly baseball season, but I found this interesting. The Public Schools Athletic League in New York is instituting a pitch count for the coming season. Varsity pitchers will be on a 105-pitch limit with JV pitchers limited to 90 pitches. Here’s a link to the story. What do you think? I think it’s long overdue.

We’ve got a lot of good baseball coaches in the area, and most of them are pretty careful when it comes to protecting pithers’ arms, but there’s been some knuckleheads who just don’t get it. Most of them are coaching at the youth levels. Little League did the right thing when it introduced a pitch count. It should be emulated at youth leagues around the country. And the PSAL deserves a lot of credit for a rule that, I’m sure, won’t please everybody.
