Aces to Impact Autism at NK Fundraiser

October 8th, 2010 by Annette Griffus

North Kitsap volleyball players will have more than a perfect Olympic League record riding on the outcome of their match against the Sequim Wolves on Tuesday.

The Vikings, who are ranked No. 10 in the state among Class 2A schools, are hosting an Aces for Autism fundraiser to benefit children within the North Kitsap School District. The match begins at 6:15 p.m. at NKHS.

The game is free to attend, but the Vikings are asking fans to purchase autism bracelets — like the yellow cancer bracelets — raffle tickets for four gift baskets donated by area businesses, and pledges for each ace hit during the match by either team. Fans will also receive a stamp from Dairy Queen and anything bought after the match, 10 percent of the proceeds will go to Aces for Autism.

NK assistant coach Tara Curtis, along with players and head coach Tim French, wanted to give back to the community and autism was one of her first choices. Curtis’ nephew, John Terrill, is autistic.

Curtis said very little money is raised to benefit autism, Curtis said.

“Every penny we raise we know is going directly to the cause,” she said.

Curtis said autism affects one in 110 children 18 and under, with 70 percent being male.

“There’s not a cure for it,” Curtis said, “the only way they can get any better is through learning (tools).”

Curtis said the money raised will go toward a wish list provided by the NKSD head of special education, Dorothy Siskin. Because each child is different in their autistic needs the district can only provide general classroom supplies.

“Every penny that’s donated we are going to buy the items and take them to the classroom,” Curtis said.

The Vikings have raised $1,500.
