Kitsap Teams Shut Out of Latest State Poll
February 3rd, 2010 by nathan joyceBut you can still see them here anyway. Federal Way is No. 1 for boys and girls…
Update: D’Oh. The Associated Press sent two boys polls over the wire and labeled one of them as the girls poll. Obviously I didn’t look at it took closely. Anyway, Port Angeles is rated as No.6 among Class 3A girls teams. Kingston and Central Kitsap girls (strangely not South Kitsap) are teams to watch.

Um… Federal Way is #1 in both polls because the boys’ poll is listed here again as the girls’. Auburn-Riverside is #1 in girls’ 4A, and South Kitsap is in the “considered” in most polls.
February 3rd, 2010 at 9:49 pm
Investigate! Central Kitsap is listed in error by the AP. They are 12-7!
Here is the actual 4A girls rankings:
1. Auburn Riverside (18-0)
2. Federal Way (15-3)
3. Woodinville (15-1)
4. Chiawana (16-1)
5. Newport (15-1)
6. Edmonds-Woodway (15-1)
7. Mead (13-3)
8. Issaquah (13-3)
9. Kentwood (14-4)
10. Central Valley (12-4)
Teams to watch : Bethel (14-4), Bellarmine Prep (12-6), Gonzaga Prep (12-5), Jackson (13-3), Lewis & Clark (11-5), Monroe (13-4), Mount Tahoma (16-3), Puyallup (14-4), Richland (13-4), Rogers (13-5), Skyview (12-4), South Kitsap (13-5), Evergreen (13-3), Wenatchee (13-4)

I don’t know where you got your rankings, but that’s not this week’s AP poll. I pulled it right off the AP wire.
I know CK is 12-7, and you’re right it probably is a mistake, but it’s not one that requires investigation. Either AP messed up or some voters out there picked the wrong school.
February 3rd, 2010 at 10:05 pm
Nathan– what I’m saying is the AP poll is obviously WRONG. I would expect some investigation on the Sun’s part to check the correct rankings, or not post them at all if suspicious (rather than just give in and say: “oh weird, but here they are”…).
I doubt very much that votes were wrong, more like at mleast one typo via the AP
February 3rd, 2010 at 10:11 pm
Well Wolfreak, sorry to disappoint you, but I’ve been busy covering signing day, writing blog posts, taking prep calls, writing stories and trying to publish a sports section than “investigate” if AP had a typo or not in the team to watch section of the girls basketball poll. And as for your doubts about whether somebody voted for CK — I’ve seen much stranger rankings.
February 3rd, 2010 at 10:25 pm
Wow… Nathan… why are you so defensive? Your caring less about the accuracy of the rankings and your sarcasm shows that –possibly– some of that inaccuracy may leak to some of the other of the Sun’s stories, then…? Really surprised at your reaction.
February 3rd, 2010 at 11:08 pm
Look, it’s not my poll, it’s the Associated Press’ poll and, other than my vote, it’s completely out of my hands.
Voters plug votes into the computer and the report is generated and stuck on the wire. People aren’t manually typing in the schools so it’s not a typo issue.
When I mentioned earlier that it was probably a mistake, I meant that it’s not an inaccuracy, it’s just bad voting by somebody in some part of the state and there’s nothing to be done. Take into consideration that CK entered the week with just one less loss and it’s easy to see why somebody may have voted for them.
February 3rd, 2010 at 11:45 pm
Yes it IS a typo issue! I’ve seen MANY schools’ names/locations typed in error on many different rankings (“Wilson” vs “Wenatchee” on the 4A wrestling poll earlier this season, as well as locations (Example: I’ve seen “South Kitsap (Silverdale)” at the Seattle Times way too many times. Not to mention almost all polls quite often have the records wrong.
Your statement about that is was “strange” that South Kitsap wasn’t listed (as they should have), and Central Kitsap was, well… that’s an obvious typo by whoever is entering the data at AP, don’tcha think?
The point being, Nathan, that you would publish an inaccurate “poll” that you yourself questioned… that is not a service at all to your readers. The Sun is lazy, lately, and it’s showing (just ask me for more examples).
February 4th, 2010 at 12:17 am
OK, this is the last I’m going to say about this. This has gotten truly tedious.
No, I don’t believe it is a typo issue. The fact that you’ve seen typos in other things has nothing to do with this.
As I said, this is a computer-generated report. Nobody types anything. Voters across the state vote online for a school from a pull-down menu and then hit submit. Nobody typed in the wrong school because nobody typed anything. That information is crunched by a computer and spit out on the wire.
Nobody types anything so there is no typo.
They simply voted for a school with a worse record than another. That happens. Again, that is not an inaccuracy.
I said it was strange that SK wasn’t listed because I thought it was strange that more people didn’t vote for them. Not that I felt the poll was inaccurate.
Just because you don’t agree with how people voted does not make something inaccurate.
Feel free to continue posting, but it will be a one-sided conversation from here on out…
February 4th, 2010 at 12:39 am
Wow, Nathan…you must be having a tough night. I don’t want to talk to you anymore, either. I’ll be sure that the Sun’s editor is aware of your feeling “tedium”.
February 5th, 2010 at 9:43 am
Wow, I bet you guys could to come to an understanding if you talked face-to-face. It is so hard to have a give-and-take discussion via email or blogs.
Yes, people make mistakes. Nathan did admit that the AP by mistake sent out the same poll for both boys and girls, and that he should have looked at them more closely before publishing them.
Hey, Nathan is one guy, trying to cover lots of sports. Staffs have been cut at newspapers across the country. Local newspapers are having difficult times financially right now. Please keep supporting the Sun. We would lose much of our local coverage if the Sun closed down. (Look at the poor excuse for a paper the CK Reporter / Bremerton Patriot has become.)
Thanks Nathan, Jeff, Chuck and Annette for your coverage of local sports.

My goodness Wolfreak! May I assume your from the South Kitsap area of the county? Maybe you need to go back to your den until you can come out with a better attitude?
As far as I know this year’s SK Girls Basketball team has the best record coming out of the High School in years and that’s what counts as far as the stat’s for now.
Most of the SK Girls team’s have been a part of several of the South Kitsap Youth Rec leagues beginning as first graders. Many progressed in to the Junior High and Select teams as they went along.
What this this year’s team has accomplished as well as the outstanding job their second year coach Mark Lutsenheiser has done has taken them to where they are today-number one in the Bay division and on there way in to post-season play.
Wolffreak-Be kind, don’t be so rude. It’s just “numbers.” The real story about any article lies withing the team itself.
Play tough SK!

Oops! Wolfreak! I had a “typo” in my comment! (Truly) Please don’t howl at me! ; )
