4A Football: SK vs. CK Matchup Possible in Quarterfinals
November 8th, 2009 by cstarkIf South Kitsap and Central Kitsap win their first-round state playoff games, they will meet in the quarterfinals. Here’s the 4A state bracket.
Central is at No. 5-ranked Curtis on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
South Kitsap hosts No. 2 Skyline. The venue and time have not been announced.
No. 1 Bothell is also on their side of a very, very tough bracket.

I am a South Kitsap supporter so I hopefully this does not come across as a complaint. Not only is this a hard bracket but I would say it is the hardest of them all.
It is unfair to not only SK who are undefeated but also Bothell and Skyline. The teams who are ranked in the top 16 should be in opposite halves of the draw. i.e. 1 plays 16, 2 plays 15, etc, etc. If that means travelling East of the mountains then so be it. Travelling is part of the game. The WIAA really need to take a hard serious look at how they make these decisions on the brackets. It seems unfair on all the top teams. If I am wrong I apologize and someone please correct me.
Otherwise good luck CK.
South Kitsap Wolves just take it to them Spartans. You guys can do it.

You’re right that this is a tough bracket.
But polls don’t have anything to do with state brackets. The brackets are set up based on seeds out of leagues and districts. If you’re the top seed from the Narrows, you go into the bracket at a certain spot. If you’re the second seed from the KingCo, you go into the bracket at a specific spot.
Complicating matters is the state preliminary round. A few years ago, all the districts got together and decided it would be fun to pool their berths into the state tournament and create an extra round to the playoffs. While that has added some excitement to the tournament, it has created some issues with the seeding into state. Teams don’t head into state as the seeds intended by the WIAA, they head in as seeds created by the district, assigned to winners in the preliminary round.
It has created a few first-round matchups that are strange. Two years, ago Lakes and Skyline faced off as the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the state in the first round. It was just the way the seeds worked out from the preliminary round.

Come playoff time, the WIAA should do what they do in California – when the playoff teams are decided (in the various sections), they lock themselves in a room and don’t come out until the bracket is done so one 1 plays 16, 2 plays 15, and so on. Just a thought.
