Wrestling Rankings

The Kitsap Sun’s wrestling preview will be published at the end of the week, but here are some preseason rankings courtesy of the Washington Wrestling Report.

Several stud wrestlers graduated last year, including South Kitsap’s Matt Foxworthy and Bremerton’s Billy Richardson, both of whom are now wrestling in college (Foxworthy is at Northern Colorado and Richardson is at Mesa State). But there are some talented kids returning.

I like what Olympic brings back in juniors Branden Yeik and Jesse Borcherding. Yeik won a state title last year at 130 pounds, while Borcherding was a regional runner-up and took fourth at state at 112. In the WWR preseason rankings, Borcherding is ranked third at 125 behind Enumclaw’s Sam Bauer and Jericho Urmentina of Auburn Mountainview. Yeik is ranked second at 140 pounds behind another Enumclaw wrestler, Jason Gray. Gray won a state title at 125 pounds last season.

Two locals earned top pre-season rankings: Klahowya 135-pounder Neil Sell, a state finalist last season, and Port Angeles heavyweight John Camp.

Here’s a list of local athletes who made the rankings:

Class 4A

South Kitsap’s Joel Miner (13th, 112), Simon Kipperberg (7th, 119), Adam Ferguson (7th, 130).

Central Kitsap’s Trevor Stanburg (12th, 125).

Class 3A

Olympic’s Jesse Borcherding (3rd, 125), Branden Yeik (2nd, 140), Shane Galeski (4th, 171).

Bremerton’s Andres Garcia (3rd, 189).

Port Angeles’s John Camp (1st, 285).

Class 2A

Klahowya’s John Hays (5th, 130), Neil Sell (1st, 135).

Sequim’s Ethan Hinton (4th, 189), Joe Hutchison (3rd, 135).

Klahowya’s John Hays is not wrestling this year. Kevin Schiffman (soph) a state participant last year will be wrestling 130-135

Yeah, the WWR typically has a handful of kids ranked who either graduated the year before, moved, or quit wrestling. It’s far from a definitive rankings list, but usually they’ve got a good grasp of the top 3/4 ranked kids in each class.

    Jeff,

Thanks for the pub on local kids who are ranked, it does a great deal to support the sport. One Senior you missed at SK is Kyle Fenton who is ranked at 9 in 4A 135. I suppose I have a keen eye for that since it is my son, Thanks again for promoting the sport!

  4. Len Borchers Says:

2a: Joe Hutchison at 135 is Sequim not North Mason
