Around the State

November 3rd, 2008 by nathan joyce

Lots of big stuff happened around the state this week. Check it out…

Football: Skyline Wins Classic on ESPN

ESPNU came to Sammamish to see a KingCo 4A showdown pitting the No. 10 Bothell Cougars and the No.1 Skyline Spartans.

It didn’t leave disappointed.

Skyline, ranked seventh in the nation by USA Today, rallied in the final minutes to beat Bothell 16-12 in front of 3,700 fans.

Skyline (9-0) kept its 22-game winning streak alive, but just barely, in the KingCo title game.

Kasen Williams caught a 16-yard TD pass from Jake Heaps with 1:56 to play for the final margin. Williams had nine catches for 182 yards and two touchdowns.

Bothell (6-3) fumbled on its ensuing possession.

The Cougars put a scare the in the Spartans, which won the Class 3A state title last year before moving up a classification.

“They came up and punched us in the mouth, and that’s something we’re not used to,” Heaps, the No. 1 junior QB in the nation according to several scouting services, told the Seattle Times.

Nick Kaylor hit a 39-yard field goal with five minutes remaining to give Bothell the lead.

Bothell’s three losses have come against the No.1 team in the 4A classification, the No. 1 team in the 3A classification (Bellevue) and a team that was, at one point, No. 2 in the 4A (Issaquah).

Football: National Record for Prosser’s Moore

Kirby Moore broke the national high school record for touchdown receptions during the Prosser Mustangs’ 48-17 win over Ephrata.

Moore has 85 career touchdown receptions. The previous record was 83 set by Abram Booty of Shreveport (La.) Evangel Christian from 1993-96.

Moore plans to play his college ball at Boise State. Moore spent his first two seasons in high school catching passes from older brother Kellen Moore, now the QB for the Broncos.

Moore has 24 TD catches this season, giving him a chance to break his state record of 29, which he set last year.

ALSO: The Union Titans of Vancouver finished the regular season undefeated (9-0) in just their second year of existence. Union wrapped up the Class 3A Greater St. Helen’s League title with a 26-21 win over Camas. … The No. 2 Olympia Bears wrapped up the Narrows League title with a 52-0 pasting of Foss. … The Curtis Vikings wrapped up the South Puget Sound League South Division title with a 73-0 beating of Emerald Ridge. … Eastside Catholic won its first Metro League title since 1993 with a 38-14 win over West Seattle.

Basketball: Gaddy Lands at Washington

Abdul Gaddy Jr., rated the No. 2 point guard in the nation by Scout.com, originally committed to Arizona, but backed off as coach Lute Olson retired.

The Bellarmine Prep senior decided Washington would be his second choice, picking the Huskies over UCLA.

“We came back to the drawing board and (UW) coach (Lorenzo) Romar has always been there,” Abdul Gaddy Sr. told the Seattle Times. “He’s followed him since he was a freshman in high school. And it will be a great opportunity to play in front of family and friends. It was just kind of a no-brainer at the end.”

Gaddy, who is 6-foot-3, averaged 23 points per game and led the Lions to a third-place finish at the Class 4A state tournament.

Gaddy’s dad said he will be in college at least two years.

“He’s not going to be a one-and-done kid,” Gaddy Sr. told the Times. “So he’s excited to go play there and have that opportunity to have a degree. This will be an opportunity to spread his wings a little bit but not be too far away.”

Cross Country: Spokane Streak in Jeopardy?

Spokane-area cross country teams have won 20 straight big-school (currently Class 4A) boys state cross country titles. Mead, the defending champs, have led the way with 13 of those titles. The state meet is Saturday at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco.

Mead is ranked third in the state coaches poll behind Jackson and Gig Harbor. Mead was third in its regional meet. Ferris, which is ranked seventh, was first.

Jackson of Mill Creek could prove tough to beat. It is ranked No. 23 in the nation.
