Youth Served by Bainbridge Symphony Program, Art Display

Youth — and music lovers of all ages — will be served by the Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra ’s program “Fables and Fairy Tales,” which will be performed March 7 and 8 at Bainbridge Performing Arts .
Music Director David Upham will be on the podium for the program, which will get a 3 p.m. matinee treatment both days.
On the easels will be the first movement of Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 19 in F Major (with guest soloist Tyler Sherper ), selections from Edward Elgar’s “Wand of Youth” suites and Prokofiev’s beloved “Peter and the Wolf” (with actor Guy Sidora providing the narration.
The music definitely is geared for a young audience, and much of the concerts’ ambiance will be created by young artists. BSO put out an open invitation for youngsters to submit their work, and received several hundreds of responses. More than 100 submitted pieces have bee incorporated into a slide show, which will be shown during the “Wand of Youth” performances each day. The artwork also will be shown before and after the performances in the lobby.
Sherper, a student at Bainbridge’s Hyla Middle School , will front the orchestra for the opening movement of Mozart’s good-natured, optimistic concerto, which also is known as his second “coronation concerto.”
English composer Elgar orchestrated pieces he originally wrote as a child for his “Wand of Youth” suites. The movements, from theatrical pieces created by Elgar and his siblings, were given fanciful titles like “Moths and Butterflies,” “The Sun Dance” and “Faeries and Giants.”
Prokofiev’s whimsical “Peter and the Wolf” debuted quietly in 1936, but gradually grew into a cornerstone of children’s classical repertoire. Its storytelling, which incorporates various orchestral instruments providing the “voices” of the animals, makes it a favorite of audiences — young and otherwise — to this day.
Each performance will be preceded at 2:15 p.m. by a pre-concert chat with Maestro Upham.
